Rolex, the leading luxury watchmaking brand, is proud to support the BLOODHOUND Project as it embarks on its first record-breaking year. This global landmark project aims to break the current World Land Speed Record of 763 miles per hour (1,227.92 km/h) in 2015 and, furthermore, to set a new World Land Speed Record of 1,000 miles per hour (1,609.34 km/h) in South Africa in 2016, inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers. Rolex has been a part of this ultimate journey of human endeavour and pioneering technology since it joined the BLOODHOUND Project in 2011 as the Official Timing Partner.

In April 2014, Rolex combined world-class technology with its exacting standards of precision and reliability to exclusively develop and manufacture two bespoke instruments for BLOODHOUND SSC, an analogue speedometer and chronograph, which are now installed in the cockpit of the supersonic car. Building on Rolex’s legendary reliability, their highly accurate analogue dials will sit either side of BLOODHOUND SSC’s driver Andy Green’s hands on the left and right of the dashboard, providing a necessary visual reference and fail-safe back-up for some of the on-screen readouts during critical moments in the record attempts: assisting precision braking from 1,000 mph on the 20-kilometre track and timekeeping operations to monitor various systems such as the jet engine and hybrid rocket.

2014 has been a critical year in the BLOODHOUND SSC build andpreparation process. In October 2014, BLOODHOUND’s engineers trial installed the one-tonne Eurofighter Typhoon turbofan jet engine(EJ200) in the upper part of the car’s structure. In November, rockettesting was carried out in Norway and most recently the BLOODHOUND team visited the Hakskeen Pan to test the desert communications infrastructure using a fast jet to simulate the speed of BLOODHOUND SSC. Twenty thousand tonnes of stones have now been removed from the desert to ensure the ‘track’ is in perfect condition ahead of the record attempts in 2015.

Every step of this engineering adventure is taken after meticulous preparation and with precise attention to detail, always striving to push the limits of technology and innovative engineering. These values are precisely what ties Rolex and BLOODHOUND SSC together and why the partnership is such a natural fit.

Aside from setting a new World Land Speed Record of 1,000 miles per hour, BLOODHOUND SSC also aims to inspire future generations to choose careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Project is already engaging with thousands of schools, colleges and universities worldwide. With its in-house research and development facilities and strong science, engineering and technology base, Rolex is acutely aware of the international shortage of trained engineers and scientists and the need to attract more youngsters into these professions. Through a variety of programmes and philanthropic activities, Rolex is actively engaged in several initiatives that have a broader educational scope or are directly related to sharing and transmitting knowledge, encourage the spirit of enterprise and contribute to the common good. Many have a distinct scientific flavour and place talented young people at their centre. As such Rolex’s partnership with the BLOODHOUND Project is a perfect alliance and further exemplifies Rolex’s support of cutting-edge endeavour and young individuals seeking to expand the boundaries of knowledge.

BLOODHOUND SSC will be fully assembled by mid-2015 and will then begin testing in the UK before it travels to South Africa for its first World Land Speed Record attempt in the late summer of 2015.

Arnaud Boetsch, Communication & Image Director of Rolex SA, said: “As the leading luxury watchmaking brand, Rolex felt the nature and the global appeal of the partnership with BLOODHOUND SSC was of clear interest and in line with Rolex’s strategy to partner projects that have strong symbolic value.

“The BLOODHOUND Project is one of the most highly technological global initiatives driven by a spirit of extraordinary human endeavour. The association marks Rolex’s support for projects that share a passion for performance and precision, founded on their pursuit of excellence in technology and innovative engineering.

“It is an inspirational project, which aims to encourage all generations, especially the young, to embrace the world of science and technology, and Rolex is very much looking forward to embarking on the next chapter of this incredible adventure with the BLOODHOUND Project as it aims to push the limits of the possible to the extreme.”

Richard Noble, the BLOODHOUND Project Director, said: “BLOODHOUND SSC is an enormous and extremely long-running project that wouldn’t be possible without longstanding partners such as Rolex. Rolex understands exactly what is at the heart of the BLOODHOUND Project and has supported us from the very beginning.”

Andy Green, BLOODHOUND SSC driver, said: “BLOODHOUND SSC is a project with strong symbolic values, not only designing and building the fastest car on earth but ultimately inspiring the next generation to take on careers in science and technology. We are delighted to have Rolex supporting BLOODHOUND both from a technical and inspirational point of view, especially as we enter this new and exciting phase of the Project. I am really looking forward to using the bespoke Rolex instruments in the cockpit of the car for the first time next summer.”
