The North East and North regions of Thailand will central to the strategy of industry players looking to grow their automotive after sales business, according to a new Industry Report from global growth strategy consulting firm, Ipsos Business Consulting. Speaking about the report findings, Natee Ruengjirachuporn, Country Head for Thailand at Ipsos Business Consulting remarked that currently, North East and North regions together accounts for 36% of total out-of-warranty passenger vehicle (PV) population in Thailand. "The North East region has the highest PV population growth at CAGR of 9% from 2010-2015 due to strong economic growth from increasing cross-border trade supported by the presence of special economic zones", Mr.Natee said.

Ipsos Business Consulting notes that many automotive OEMs are focused on maximizing their revenue and profit from strong performance in the after sales market; however, the OEMs are unlikely to be the main beneficiaries from the growth in out-of-warranty vehicle population. Chukiat Wongtaveerat, Senior Manager at Ipsos Business Consulting pointed to the strength of the large network of independent workshops across Thailand and the wide range of services that they offered. Mr.Chukiat noted that "with more than 10,000 outlets across the country, independent workshops - both certified and uncertified - will almost certainly be important channels for automotive component manufacturers looking to seize the opportunity within independent after sales market". Mr.Natee added that he believed the component manufacturers should be alert to the influence held by the service technician in these workshops and how the technician can direct customers on the selection of an appropriate auto part. "Our findings show that customers can be highly influenced by the service technician when choosing a brand. Customers are most concerned about the perceived quality of spare parts and will look towards the service technician for a recommendation. " Mr.Natee commented.

The Industry Report from Ipsos also highlights why a strong distribution channel will be a cornerstone of success for any auto component manufacturer seeking to take advantage of the expected growth in the Thai after sales market. The Ipsos team notes that general parts distributors are the important partners for automotive players looking to distribute products into the independent aftermarket.
