- Ericsson’s analysis shows that Thailand is ranked third in download speeds (median, cell-edge and peak) in South East Asia and Oceania, but Thai operators still need to continue improving their app coverage in order to catch up the markets with extensive LTE coverage like Singapore and Australia.

- Line, Facebook, and YouTube are the top three apps actively used by smartphone users in Thailand

- The rise of data traffic in Thai mobile networks means that application performance is becoming critical

Ericsson releases its third South East Asia and Oceania Region Appendix to the Ericsson Mobility Report. The appendix illustrates regional contrasts in areas such as smartphone uptake, top app usage, access to LTE, and network performance. Measurements show that social networking, instant messaging, and video streaming dominate smartphone usage in the region with varied app preference from market to market. In Thailand, Line, Facebook, and YouTube are the top three apps actively used by smartphone users.

Ericsson Mobility Report also indicates that the positive effect of expanded LTE coverage and increased spectrum allocation for LTE, started last year by the major carriers, continued to yield benefits in download speeds over the last quarter. With the ongoing introduction of LTE carrier aggregation by operators, a further boost in speeds is expected throughout 2015 as more devices that support the standard become commercially available.

Ericsson’s analysis of Speedtest.net data from Ookla shows that consumers in markets with extensive LTE coverage like Singapore and Australia will have a better experience in data-intensive applications, such as video streaming, delivered by mobile networks than others.

Camilla Vautier, Head of Ericsson Thailand, says: “As users discover new ways to consume data, it will be of greater importance for service providers to be able to fulfil that demand.”

“With growth in smartphone subscriptions continuing, operators will need to focus on network performance and capacity expansion, especially in LTE networks, to improve quality of user experience,” Vautier added.
