INTERNATIONAL CHOIR FESTIVAL TO PRESENT “CARMINA”

Friday 29 July 2016 18:53
What piece of classical music is most listened to in the world today? A good case can be made for Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, whose iconic opening, popularized in the movie Excalibur, has so influenced Hollywood that it is now impossible to watch any "epic" fantasy or mediaeval costume epic without the score giving a nod to Carmina.

Thailand has been blessed with several performances of the work recently, notably a fine rendition by the Thailand Philharmonic a couple of months ago. Opera Siam's performance, planned for over a year, is part of its annual international choir festival celebrated each year around the time of HRH The Crown Prince's birthday, which climaxes with an international competition in Pattaya, in collaboration with Festa Musicale, a Czech competition organizer which runs choir festivals on four continents.

Choirs participating include the Collegium Technicum from Košice, Slovakia, the Japanese Choir of Thailand, the Orpheus Choir, the Calliope Chamber Choir, and the Imanuel Children's Chorus as well as the Bangkok Music Society.

The soloists are two of the most beloved international opera stars by Thai audiences: Nancy Yuen, who has sung more than ten roles here including her signature roles of "Madama Butterfly" and "Mae Naak", and Kyu Won Han, most recently seen as the Flying Dutchman here in Bangkok.

Somtow Sucharitkul will be conducting the Siam Philharmonic Orchestra.
