JAMS to Open International Arbitration Centers in Los Angeles and New York

Wednesday 11 July 2018 09:10
JAMS , the largest private provider of mediation and arbitration services worldwide, today announced plans to open JAMS International Arbitration Centers (JIACs) in New York and Los Angeles, increasing access to international arbitration facilities for attorneys and their clients worldwide. The announcement anticipates a new choice of seat for international arbitrations in California in January 2019 following the recent passage of California Senate Bill 766 and its anticipated approval by the Governor.

JAMS is a leading global arbitration provider with panelists specializing in international arbitration across a number of industries, including Engineering / Construction, Sports & Entertainment, Intellectual Property and IT. JAMS handles hundreds of international arbitrations each year, and provides important resources including the JAMS International Arbitration Rules and the JAMS International Clause Workbook . The JAMS International Arbitration Schedule of Fees and Costs ensures fee transparency when engaging an international arbitrator. JAMS also hosts arbitration proceedings administered by other international providers.

"JAMS' goal is to offer facilities that reflect the premiere international arbitration services we offer to attorneys and their clients," said Chris Poole, JAMS president and CEO. "We are seeing an upward trend in international arbitrations at JAMS, and the demand for accessible, comfortable venues cannot be overstated. By establishing these centers in two of the world's top business and travel centers, we aim to provide attorneys access to the tools and services necessary to conduct these proceedings in an efficient and cost-effective manner."

The centers, scheduled to open by the end of 2018, are the first of several planned JAMS International Arbitration Centers and will be established within existing JAMS Resolution Center locations. The facilities feature upgraded amenities to provide efficient, comfortable international arbitration proceedings. In addition to JAMS' usual features, such as JAMS Cafes and Business Centers, the JIACs will have:

- Large LCD monitors and high-quality video conferencing for remote participants and witness cross-examination

- Translation booths and capabilities

- Complimentary, high-speed internet

- Spacious and secure hearing rooms, and several breakout rooms

- Modular tables for flexible meeting setups

- Extensive shelving for document storage

- Dedicated phone lines for case intake across time zones

- Vetted vendors, including court reporting and translation services

- Arbitrator lounges, for tri-partite proceedings

The JAMS Los Angeles International Arbitration Center, located in the downtown business district and near leading hotels and restaurants, will be among the first in California. If SB 766 becomes law, California would become a new and appealing choice for attorneys to seat their international arbitrations by allowing the participation of out-of-state and non-U.S. lawyers.
