In the world of sports, there is always a spotlight shining on the man of the match; an elite athlete, who brings thrills and excitement to the game. Certainly, behind the success of every athlete, aside from rigorous training and commitment to their goals, is the strong support from their families, team, fans and others. However, we should always remember that proper nutrition is one of the success factors behind great athletes as it can help enhance their athletic performance.

Dr. Julián Álvarez García, a specialist in sports medicine and sports physiology and a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, says that balanced nutrition is vital for sport players, regardless of their level. "Indeed, aiming for good nutrition should be a way of life for all athletes. They need to intensely focus on the contents and timing of their food, understanding such choices and loosely modelling their routines after that so they can benefit from good health over the long term. And, for sure it will increase the effectiveness of training and indeed improve their performance."

If you are interested in boosting your sports nutrition, the main recommendation from Dr. Julián is to feed your entire sporting activity. This means that in addition to taking care with nutrition for competitions, you must attend to nutrition during your everyday training, as it greatly impacts your body's response. And also, your performance in competitions depends on how you perform in your training sessions.

Vital Nutrition for Athletes
Dr. Julián shares the 3 important nutrients that athletes shouldn't miss and how they affect performance.
Carbohydrate (and Fat) – Source of Energy

During exercise you NEED energy, and most comes from carbohydrates and fat, with carbohydrates taking over at higher intensities. Studies have found it worthwhile to eat a meal rich in carbohydrates several hours before exercise, with good options including whole grain breads, potatoes, and fruit. Snacks between meals further boost energy intake. Because you can fill your carbohydrates deposits, choosing the right carbohydrates at the right time lasting the days leading up to a competition.

Protein – Best Care after Training

You need to eat protein before and especially after exercise, as it's vital for producing new muscle tissue and repairing muscles that are strained during exercise (which we call adaptation). Typically, only resistance training may require a special increase in protein, but endurance athletes also require protein for recovering and replenishing carbohydrate reserves.

Many sportsmen and women may consider it challenging to get the necessary nutrition through traditional meals, simply because they take time to prepare as well as eat, but optimal recovery is not only a problem of what to eat, also depending on when. So, the sooner, the better. This has led to the increasing popularity of protein/carbohydrate shakes that deliver key nutrition in the form of a drink. Such nutrition is accurate, easy and fast –?and so, optimal.

These shakes are not all created equal. Some have very high protein content, like those popular with body builders, who have higher muscle damage that needs repairing. Others have more carbohydrates, for athletes needing to restore energy levels, better suiting sports such as cricket.

Fluid – Reduce Fatigue, Heat, and Dehydration during Exercise

In addition to carbohydrates, proteins, fats and micro-nutrients (vitamins and minerals), you also need to drink enough fluids. Hydration is crucial during exercise. There's an oft-repeated principle about drinking at least eight glasses of water per day, but as exercise can swiftly deplete your body of fluid, you should take special care to replace your fluids –?including electrolytes –?after exercise. Otherwise, studies show you'll suffer both physically and mentally. And we can take advantage of this "fluid replacement" to carry other nutrients to your working muscles. So, it is an exciting field in continuous evolution.

All elite athletes must observe strict discipline when it comes to nutrition to achieve the best results. It has never been easy to stay on the right track, especially when there are so many tasty dishes tempting you almost every day. But stay focused on achieving your sports goal and you'll know you can do it!. Remember, you can be your own champion!
