Bangkok--Aug 2--SET

Thailand Securities Institute (TSI) will collaborate with the Ministry of Education and the Money Channel to hold a quiz game, 'Financial Literary Competition 2005', for 10th & 11th graders nationwide. Prizes include cash, training, and a 2-week study trip to Australia sponsored by Overseas Ed Co., Ltd. The game will be broadcast via the Money Channel on UBC 97.   Applications are being accepted until Aug. 15. The first qualifying round in Bangkok will start on Aug. 2. Interested persons can see the game at the Prof. Sangvian Indaravijaya Auditorium, SET Bldg.

Executive Vice President of The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), Mr. Punsak Vejanurug, who oversees the Capital Market Education division, announced that the quiz game 'Financial Literary Competition 2005' would be a great opportunity for Thai youth to demonstrate their financial literacy skills as well as help promote personal finance education in schools.

"The game will start on Aug. 2, and students from every part of the country can join. The first qualifying round will take place in Bangkok, followed by Phitsanulok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Nakorn Rachasima, Chonburi, Surat Thani, and Songkhla.   All spots are filled for the Bangkok round, but applications are still being accepted for the other areas. To give teams in remote areas enough time to prepare, the final registration deadline- for Songkhla- will end on Aug. 15. Furthermore, the SET provides accommodation and travel expenses for rural students qualifying to play subsequent rounds in Bangkok," said Mr. Punsak.

Mr. Winai Rodjay, Advisor to the Office of the Basic Education Commission, Ministry of Education, said that the Ministry supports the SET in organizing various activities to promote financial literacy.

"The SET has not only collaborated with the Ministry of Education to produce textbooks and teaching materials on personal finance, but has also held nationwide 'train-the-trainers' programs. The quiz game is another way of educating students about personal finance and gives them a chance to show their talent," Mr. Winai said.

Mrs. Tongchit Lawvinitnun, Managing Director of Overseas Ed Co., Ltd. said, "Overseas Ed will sponsor a two-week language course and study trip to Holmes College, Australia for each of four final contestants.   Furthermore, Overseas Ed is pleased to support Thai youth in gaining more exposure in a foreign country. Despite the short stay, we hope they'll be able to learn from and share experiences with their foreign friends."

Mr. Ratchapol Laovanitch, President of Family Know-How Co., Ltd. said that the Money Channel was established to educate people about finance and investment. So, showing the 'Financial Literary Competition 2005' quiz game on UBC97 will benefit both the contestants and interested viewers, as they will learn about money management, wise spending, and economic issues affecting their daily life.

The 'Financial Literary Competition 2005' is now open for applications. Eligible students must be in either Grade 10th or 11th grade, and they must apply in teams of two, with an overseeing teacher. Each school may send only two teams; except for schools participating in the SET's 'Making Sense of Money' Project, who may send up to four teams.

The first qualifying round will start on August 2, 2005, for contestants in Bangkok. The competition will take place at Prof. Sangvian Indaravijaya Auditorium, 3rd Floor of the SET Building, between 8.00 am – 4.00 pm. There will be 12 qualifying teams from Bangkok, who will compete with teams from the other seven areas. The game will be broadcast via the Money Channel on UBC97 from Mon.--Fri., 5.00 – 6.00 pm starting on Aug.15.

Students in Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Nakorn Ratchasima, Chonburi, Surat Thani, and Songkhla can still apply. The application forms and details are available at www.tsi-thailand.org. Alternatively, students can contact the Ministry of Education administrative office supervising their schools.
