Thailand's Money Channel promotes savings and financial literacy in Phuket

General Press Releases Thursday March 29, 2007 13:17

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) subsidiary Money Channel will co-host ‘Money Channel Road Show’ in Phuket, providing area residents with games and learning activities featuring savings and investment. Attendees will have a chance to win gold necklaces, satellite dishes and cash to invest in mutual funds, worth more than THB 100,000 in total. The road show will be on April 1, 2007, 10:00 – 16:00 hrs., at Royal Phuket City Hotel.

Money Channel, a TV station specializing in economic and financial matters and founded by SET to promote financial literary, will conduct the event in conjunction with Phuket province, Phuket Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Phuket Industries, and Phuket Bankers’ Club. Money Channel Road Show, a part of the Exchange’s educational outreach program, will be held four times this year—firstly in Phuket, and then in Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen.. The channel can be viewed in the provinces through local cable TV service providers, SET Executive Vice President Mr. Vichate Tantiwanich said.

“Phuket has a lot of potential. As of February 2007, the province held THB 65 billion (about USD 1.86 billion) in savings, the second highest in the South. Last year securities trading totaled more than THB 20 billion, the third busiest regionally, after Songkhla and Surat Thani. There are six securities firms there, each with one branch.

As well as delivering savings and investment education, the road show will assure the general public, local businesspeople and foreigners about investment in the Thai market,” the SET EVP said.

At the event, there will be representatives from public agencies involved in economic policy, capital and money market experts, and about 20 booths for participating securities firms, investment management companies and listed companies. There will also be activities for children including the Magic Piggy Bank stage play.

The provincial administration strongly supports this event. It is essential that Thai households have effective savings strategies and put their money to work efficiently. This is important in current economic conditions and is part of the province’s plan to enhance people’s quality of life, Phuket Governor Mr. Niran Kalayanamit declared.

The leading seminar will be “Thai Economic Trends” by Dr. Sathit Limpongpan, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance. Other seminars include “Thai Economy and the Financial Sector: key factors and adjusting to change” jointly delivered by Dr. Somchai Sujjapongse, Deputy Director General, Fiscal Policy Office, and Dr. Amara Sriphayak, Senior Director-Domestic Economy Department, Bank of Thailand, and “Property, Tourism, Investment and Thai Stocks: where will it lead?” featuring Mr. Anusorn Tamajai, Ph.D.; Associate Professor Manop Bongsadadt, President of FIABCI (The International Real Estate Federation), and Mr. Wichit Na-Ranong, Honorary Chairman, Tourism Council of Thailand.

Participants who hold mutual funds or stocks will receive special gifts upon showing documentary evidence of their holdings. The first 300 persons registering to attend seminars or displaying an invitation card will receive a pocketbook. All should keep their ticket stubs for the “lucky draw”, where they could win a gold necklace or a satellite dish.
