Continental opens new Powertrain and Interior electronics manufacturing plant in Amata City, Thailand

Amata City, Rayong Province, Thailand, The international automotive supplier Continental AG has ceremonial opened its first manufacturing plant at the Amata City Industrial Estate in Rayong province, Thailand. The new plant of Continental Automotive (Thailand) Co., Ltd. will produce injectors and pumps as well as instrument clusters and other interior electronic products to supply customers in Asia and Europe. "The investment in Thailand reflects our strategy to build and strengthen our network and our manufacturing operations in Asia to reinforce our leading role in this region as Continental intends to make 25 percent of our sales in this region by 2013", said Volker Warnecke, Senior Vice President, Powertrain Asia during his speech at the opening ceremony.

With the total investment of about THB 5 billion (€100 million), the new manufacturing plant of two divisions of the Automotive Group, Powertrain and Interior, occupies a land space of 50,000 square meters, with the building area of around 25,000 square meters and the production are around 11,500 square meters. The plant comprises also logistics, clean room and central oil supply for mechanical manufacturing. Continental in Amata City plant will start the production with piezo diesel injectors and high pressure pumps of the division Powertrain for exports to China, India and Europe. The first batch of products will be exported from mid June 2009 onwards and from 2010 production will support domestic consumption. In the future, Interior electronics such as instrument clusters will also be produced at this site. The plant is designed for a capacity of 500 thousand pumps and 2.5 million injectors per year.

The General Manager of the new manufacturing plant in Amata City, Rainer Doerrheide, outlined the importance of the location posing an advantage for Continental's business: “While Thailand provides the market, Continental brings to Thailand local earnings with local sourcing and local employment.

We plan to have 40 percent of parts and components from the local suppliers as a start. We target that from 2010 onwards, our production will also support 70 percent domestic consumption and 30% for export to support the business in India and Europe.

With the opening of the Amata City plant, German-based Continental AG has shown the firm commitment of Continental to secure its future in Thailand. Thomas Chambers, Managing Director of Continental Automotive in Thailand said that "Asia is the future of growth in the automotive industry, and Thailand is the center of the car production in ASEAN. The auspicious opening of our plant today represents important milestone of our expansion plans here - to provide even more effective and advanced technical support to auto makers in the Thailand market, and to serve our exports market from here," added Chambers.

One of the main focuses of the automotive industry in the growth markets in Asia will be environment friendly vehicles and so-called affordable cars: people want more economical cars with efficient fuel consumption. "With our innovative products, we are very well placed to work towards the vision of zero-emission mobility with the intention to reduce both CO2 emissions and noise pollution from road traffic in the future," explained Warnecke to the journalists, about one of the megatrends of Continental Corporation – Environment.

Continental started the construction of the plant in Amata City in January 2008 and few months later, in May 2008, the company celebrated the laying of the foundation stone. In the same year in August the automotive supplier opened the administration and trade office in Bangkok.
