“Bangkok’s Marriott makes tea for Soi Cats and Dogs”

Wednesday 06 July 2011 13:37
In an oasis of greenery nestled by the riverside in Bangkok’s busy Sathorn area, an unlikely event is about to start. The willow is being oiled, the white shirts are being starched and men across Bangkok are practising their googlies.

For on the 10th July, as the sun rises over the river, the SCAD foundation will launch its 2011 Charity Cricket Tournament at the picturesque Shrewsbury International School.

And this will be no ordinary tournament. Run in aid of the street cats and dogs of Bangkok, this event has secured a raft of high profile sponsors all keen to do their bit for the charity. From Tesco Lotus to The Londoner, each company is preparing hard to make sure Sunday is a day to remember.

One of the most recent sponsors to join the table is Bangkok’s very own Marriott resort and Spa. The Marriott is saving cricket players and spectators from soggy sandwiches by providing the traditional cricket tea. No more limp cucumber and stale crusts made by your granny; everyone can now look forward to freshly baked cakes and tasty sandwiches.

This really will be a day to remember, with all proceeds going to help SCAD continue its work of neutering, adoption and community education.

"The Tournament is at Shrewsbury International School Bangkok and starts at 09.30 on the 10th July. All are welcome so get ready to cheer on your favourite team whilst you sit back with a cold beer."

Notes for Editor

SCAD Foundation is a registered charity and stands for Soi Cats And Dogs. Formerly known as Soi Dog Rescue, SCAD was established in 2002 by British expat Sherry Conisbee.

SCAD is dedicated to improving the lives of street dogs and cats through programs of sterilization, education and adoption.

Since its inception, SCAD has helped over 5,600 street dogs and 2,800 street cats. There have been 862 adoptions and 133 of those were to homes in Canada, the USA and Europe.

One example of SCAD’s work is the story of Bernadette (picture attached). When Bernadette came to SCAD she was close to death. She was emaciated, limping badly due to a damaged pelvis, and was hairless from mange, blood parasites, bacterial infections and malnutrition. Her eyes were so badly infected that she could barely open them. From day one, despite her pain, misery and infections, Bernadette never stopped wagging her stumpy tail. Her devotion to her human carers was just as strong as her will to live. With the right medication, plenty of rest, kind words and gentle hands, Bernadette flourished in SCAD's care. Her bony frame started to fill out and hair began to sprout all over her body. Her spunky, determined nature and big personality caught the eye of Jane, an American woman who has adopted many dogs, including two others from SCAD. Bernadette now has an amazing new life in America and her story can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlA3mMlrWQs .
