Pop-up Food Event

Monday 25 July 2011 09:52
To celebrate World Picnic Day, Electrolux Thailand in collaboration with the people from Opposite, Soul Food Mahanakorn, and Zudrangma Records created an interactive and artistic culinary experience celebrating the culture of North Eastern Thailand—a down-home picnic party, Isaan style.

At this pop-up food event — where a restaurant exists for just one night of unique food and setting — guests participated in the 'art-of-sharing' Thai style. This included mixing their own cocktails in stainless steel cups, receiving a "pa koa ma,” the Isaan-style kerchief which makes a handy napkin, and enjoying live music and delicious food prepared by Jarrett Wrisley of Soul Food Mahanakorn in the Electrolux kitchen at Opposite event space.

The Opposite space was filled with the mellow vibes of upcountry Thailand. The guests, including Electrolux GM Sutti Manokitjarunman, sat on mats, eating on bamboo tables and off banana leaves to share stories, music, toasts and simple, country cooking. Zudrangma Records, assembled a special morlam band showcasing the evolution of Isaan music — from traditional past to the fusion sounds of the future. Each guest received a free Zudrangma CD.

The mix-your-own cocktails station used recipes with tamarind juice and fresh mangosteens mixed with Niikki Twice-distilled 100% Rice Spirit mixed. The menu was Soul Food's house-made sai krok-Isaan sausages, grilled chicken wings, do-it-yourself somtam, laab het, nua yang, sticky rice, and khao thom mud for dessert.

“We were delighted to co-host this unique and innovative event,” said Electrolux Thailand GM Sutti Manokitjarunman.

“The combination of superb cuisine, great music, an open and friendly cultural exchange and the ultra-modern kitchen equipment from Electrolux was an absolute winner. It also had a truly international flavour with guests from countries across the globe.”

The pop-up event was a complete success. The transformation of the space into a lively picnic setting had everyone taking lost of photographs; the combination of fresh fruit in cocktails made everyone chatty with their neighbours; the delicious food had everyone licking their fingers and the great music kept everyone there past midnight!
