Santiburi Beach Resort & Spa, on the stunning northshore of Koh Samui, is expanding the offerings at its luxurious Santiburi Spa to combine indulgent massage and body treatments with alternative wellness therapies and learning experiences based on ancient Thai massage and Tibetan healing techniques.

As part of the recently launched Santiburi Beach Campus programme, therapists at Santiburi Spa will share their knowledge with guests about the principles and techniques involved in Thailand's famous therapeutic massage, often referred to as "passive yoga".

The manipulations used in Thai massage are more rigorous than those used in many other forms of the practice. The therapist twists and bends different parts of the recipient's body into different yoga-like poses, while also using his or her hands and elbows to manipulate muscles and pressure points.

The carefully targeted muscle compression, joint mobilization and acupressure techniques applied in Thai massage have been developed over centuries to relieve stress, remove tension and promote healing through increased blood circulation.

"In Thailand, massage is far more than just a way to relax and unwind. It is an integral part of the culture and has a history that goes back 2000 years," says Cedric Bonvin, General Manager at Santiburi Resort and Spa. In addition to learning about and experiencing the benefits of Thai massage, those looking to re-balance their energy can also explore the ancient art of Tibetan Energy Balancing at Santiburi Spa.

TEB techniques are applied by Reiki Master Martina Sager, who was personally initiated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India and has attended several teaching sessions in Tibet and India to deepen her understanding of this spiritual healing process which balances the five elements of the body and activates its self-healing capabilities.
