Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF) has initiated "CPF Food Standard" project to build consistent quality and food safety management system, together with environmental and social responsibility, across integrated feed-farm-food operations.

Mr. Virachai Ratanabanchuen, Chief Operating Officer of CPF – Chicken Business, said that "CPF Food Standard" project is aligned to the business framework and directions under the CPF Quality Policy. TheCPF Food Standard will be established for fully-integrated broiler business, including raw material sourcing, feed mill, hatchery, farm, slaughter house, and processing plant, to ensure that local and foreign customers' needs that are quite different are met. In addition, limiting the loss of natural resources and properly managing risks will result in more effective design and production of safe food.

According to the CPF Quality Policy, CPF Food Standard has focused on two necessary elements: 1) laws and standards required for food industry and 2) other standards that differentiate the food business with advanced values that meet consumer needs and expectations.

"The project will strengthen CPF best practices to meet the needs of customers in every single market and consumers throughout the world. Regarding to its business goal as a leading food producer, consistent quality and food safety will be made across all CPF operations" Mr.Virachai said.

Ms. Kularb Kimsri, Vice President of CPF Global Standard System Centre, added that CPF has been collaborating with British Standard Institute (BSI), the world's leading organization, in establishing the Private Standard by merging global standards such as ISO 9001, GMP, HACCP, BRC (British Retail Consortium), QS Quality Scheme for Food (QS) that being often certified across CPF operations with an integrated business model being applied. The benefit to consumer is that risks associated with every stage in supply chain can be mitigated.

"Establishing CPF Food Standard aims to make CPF products consistent (supporting CPF as a leader in quality and food safety) with sustainable values being added (to become a product sustainability leader)" Ms. Kularb said.

Previously, CPF chicken products have been certified as the world's first sustainable chicken product by Norway-based DNV-GL, the world's leading certification body for sustainability. The project will start with broiler business and expand to other CPF value chain business in 2018 followed by CPF overseas operations.

Ms. Kularb pointed out that each standard being covered in the Private Standard can be individually certified as preferred, resulting reduced duplication of work. The product quality consistence and consumers' trust will be built by implementing the single standard, allowing CPF to be a globally-recognized company.

Mr. Barnes added that CPF is large-sized food business with difference in standards being implemented. It would be necessary to have its own Private Standard to meet needs of domestic and international markets as well as to achieve the consistent product quality.

As a leading standard organization, BSI has experienced in creating and developing global standards for more than 115 years. Standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 22000 and Private Standards were originally drafted and formed by BSI. It has got 18,000 clients in 172 countries
