Asia-Pacific Macroeconomic Policy and Financing for Development Meeting Opens 6 December 6 to 8 December 2017, Bangkok, Thailand

General Press Releases Monday December 4, 2017 17:30
Bangkok--4 Dec--ESCAP-SCAS

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will bring together ministers and senior officials from Asia and the Pacific, as well as representatives of central banks and the public sector for the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development, to be held at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok from 6 to 8 December 2017.

Asia-Pacific economies are leading global economic growth but still face many development challenges, including persistent poverty and rising inequality, weak growth in decent jobs, and unsustainable use of natural resources. Sustaining long-term economic growth and addressing these challenges will require a rethinking of public policies and considerable investments by both the public and the private sector.

Against this backdrop, the Committee will identify strategies for financing sustainable development, with a focus on domestic resource mobilization, financial inclusion, infrastructure financing and leveraging private finance.

To enrich discussions, ESCAP will launch the flagship 2017 Year-end Update of the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific, along with a joint ESCAP-Oxfam report on Taxing for Shared Prosperity.
