TCDC, in collaboration with Lhong 1919, launches International Exhibition, gathering design works from 5 nations to be a part of Bangkok Design Week 2018

Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC), in collaboration with Lhong 1919, launches the International Exhibition as a part of Bangkok Design Week 2018. The exhibition is the cooperation between international design-related parties, presenting design works which reflect unique identities from 5 nations; Hong Kong, Japan, The Netherlands, Taiwan, and Italy. For Hong Kong, the "DXHK - BANGKOK Pocket Worlds" exhibition displays design works from young designers, referring to three meanings of "Pocket Worlds". Japan brings two showcases reflexing its innovative technology from two organizations; Knowledge Capital's showcase and Good Design Award 2017's showcase from Japan Institute of Design Promotion. The Netherlands presents "Here and There" exhibition, displaying design works from 10 designers who experience Thailand and visualize into design works. For Taiwan, "Big little t: RE/solution" exhibition displays more than 30 innovative and nature-friendly products from Taiwan young designers. Lastly, Italy's exhibition, "A*Maze*ing" showcases selected Italian classic design products in a maze made of carton boxes.

Mr. Kittiratana Pitipanich, Acting Director of Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC) stated that in order to further develop cooperation in organizing exhibitions with relevant interested parties, such as artists, entrepreneurs, companies, local and international organizations, Bangkok Design Week 2018 holds "International Showcase", an exhibition showing the whole picture of the current situation of creative industry at the international level and creative industry-related policies, and an overview of the cooperative development of knowledge-based design and thinking processes. It is believed that showcase is a tool for developing knowledge relevant to design, life quality improvement and sustainable development, which will pave the path toward a sustainable future and business success in the 21st century.

Mr. Kittiratana continued that this International Exhibition is the cooperation between international design-related parties, presenting design works which reflect unique identities from 5 nations as follows.

1. Hong Kong - "DXHK – BANGKOK Pocket Worlds by Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC)" brings some of the most promising young design talents of Hong Kong to the international stage, not only to showcase the energetic design power from the new generation, but also encourage the sharing of insights and vision between Thailand and Hong Kong creative community, and together, explore the future of design across spectrum. The POCKET WORLDS carries triple meaning; 1) From where we came, Hong Kong is a small, compact, pocket size city, yet being diverse, cosmopolitan, and worldly. 2) Here, our 8 young designers unfold the individual worlds, literally, from bags and luggage on the carousel. You are to discover treasures and concepts in each pocket. 3) Launching from Bangkok, our pockets are made mobile and light to travel afar. Soon we shall take off again, continuing a voyage for the 21st century Belt-and-Road.

2. Japan
  • Knowledge Capital provides a venue where businesspeople, researchers, creators, and the general public can meet to co-create new values through exchange and fusion of knowledge and ideas. Four notable projects have been chosen to be showcased here which are the beauty and tradition of Japanese calligraphy by Fude-pure Gift, the library chatbot dog by Midway Software Designs Co., Ltd., the delicate "OMOSHIRI" high quality paper works by TRIAD Inc., and virtual 'Yukimaru' doggy drone by XOOMS co.
  • Resolve "issues" with design by GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2017 by Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) - The finest 25 designs by GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2017 will be displayed. Not insisting just ONE protrude design, each respective design charging in each role sincerely, and accumulating our lives and making image of this world. This year's GOOD DESIGN AWARD makes more deepen role of proper up to now.

3. The Netherlands - "Design Meets Tourism" by "Here and There" reflects on the many face of tourism industry in Thailand such as history, food, culture and health. Invited designers Atelier NL, Studio Makkink & Bey, Marije Vogelzang, Wandschappen, Lucas Maassen, Lio de Bruin and Margriet Craens to question how design can unveil hidden potentials of experiencing a new culture or location. The theme serves as a guide and encourages designers to apply Dutch design thinking in the foreign context of Thailand.

4. Taiwan - "Big little t: RE/solution" offers a design & experiential showcase curated by Taiwanese designers, presenting visitors the image of Taiwanese design. In anticipation of this exciting event, RE/solution explores the spirit of "we are small, should be smart" and exhibits Taiwan's unique combination of design & technology that features diverse talents, inspiring innovative ideas, vibrant commercial activities, and spectacular urban ecology. More than 30 creative and innovative products are displayed in three topics; Change On the Way, Live Again, and Design for Tomorrow.

5. Italy - "A*Maze*ing" is a 3D "Maze tapestry" installation made of 2,500 white carton boxes, rooted in quantum physics patterns, showcasing selected Italian design products; such as Vespa, Ducati, and B&B Italia, which are easy to reach, look, touch and feel in specific exhibit areas. The installation core value represents Italian singularity in design. The project focuses in the art of making something meaningful and aims to engage people in a physical product experience.

This cooperation from 5 nations can be counted as another step in gearing Thailand's creative and design industry, both in term of inspiring Thailand's creative and design personnel and in term of exchanging creative mindset and business opportunity between designers and entrepreneurs from different culture, Mr. Kittiratana concluded.
