Towards the end of the nineteenth century, French music was in a state of transition between the great Romantic movement and the more modern music that seemed to want to break free from the purely lyrical approach of romanticism. At the same time, the great impressionist artists such as Monet and Cezanne were rising into prominence and several composers found their musical ideas echoing this new art form.

This recital, entitled "The French Alternative" by distinguished violin and piano duo, Tasana Nagavajara and Pornphan Banternghansa, contains music by three of the composers whose music reflects the dramatic and enlightened changes taking place in France towards the end of the nineteenth century and the start of the twentieth century.

Firstly, Gabriel Faure, best known for his amazing output of chamber music, was a distinguished organist as well as a remarkable pianist; secondly, Erik Satie, King of Salon music, spent a great deal of his creative time in cabarets in Montmartre where the remarkable "Gymnopedies" were first performed; and lastly, Claude Debussy, one of France's most distinguished composers of music for the piano, wrote compositions that deeply reflected the impressionist art movement. Satie and Debussy became friends and their various compositions were greatly influenced by other composers such as Faure. So in this interesting and thoughtful program, we have a distinguished gathering of late romantic musical ideas in transition, all three important musicians having a great influence on the composers who were to follow in their footsteps, including Stravinsky, Poulenc and Ravel.
