  • BCS joined efforts to eliminate ocean plastic at a forum hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment at Siam Pavalai Royal Grand Theatre on World Oceans Day (8 June).
  • Leaders from government and NGOs and industry experts gathered at the conference to find ways to protect the seas around Thailand and beyond, highlighting the issue of single-use plastic products.
  • BCS co-founder Dr Jwanwat Ahriyavraromp was presented with a statuette for the organization's support of the event and its wider efforts to preserve and restore marine and coastal ecosystems.

Blue Carbon Society (BCS), a non-profit organization to protect and restore marine and coastal ecosystems, sponsored and participated in a forum on the urgent issue of plastic ocean waste, convened by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment at Siam Pavalai Royal Grand Theatre on World Oceans Day (8 June).

Government officials, NGO heads, and industry experts gathered at the conference to figure out ways to reduce plastic waste in Thailand's seas and beyond. The forum was followed by the premiere of a 40-minute film produced by the ministry to highlight the impact of plastic waste on marine life.

Dr Jwanwat Ahriyavraromp, co-founder of BCS and the CEO of Shellhut Entertainment, was presented with a statuette by General Surasak Kanchanarat, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, in recognition of BCS's support of the event and its efforts for environments like mangroves, seagrass meadows, and salt marshes.

"BCS is honored to assist in this outstanding initiative from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to address this vital challenge for Thailand and the world," said Dr Ahriyavraromp.

"The pilot whale that died last week in Thai waters after swallowing over 80 plastic bags shows why events such as today's forum are important. But today's message from government leaders, industry experts, and NGOs is that every sector is eager to tackle the issue of plastic ocean waste."

The forum focused on sea tourism and how discarded plastic products damage the seas around Thailand.
"One of BCS's key missions is to spread awareness of how we can all contribute to protecting ocean life through our everyday actions," said Dr Ahriyavraromp.

"Reducing the use of plastics and the associated litter is not only crucial for marine life. Ecosystems like mangroves and seagrass meadows are also essential for slowing climate change, which can affect life everywhere. These environments absorb carbon from the atmosphere up to four times faster than forests on land. This 'blue carbon' can be a lifeline as we confront man-made greenhouse gas emissions."

About Blue Carbon Society
Blue Carbon Society (BCS) is a Thailand-based non-profit organization that inspires global action to improve the capacity of marine and coastal environments to combat climate change.

Established in 2018 by Dr Jwanwat and Mrs Thippaporn Ahriyavraromp, the organization is named after the 'blue carbon' that ecosystems like mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass meadows gather and store, slowing the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from human activities.

BCS aims to preserve and restore these environments by organizing activities, forming a knowledge hub, building collaboration and developing expertise and human capital.
