Beauty and Ugliness : Aesthetic of Marsi

Marsi Foundation in corporation with the National Gallery will hold the art exhibition by H.S.H. Princess Marsi Paribatra, first major in five-year period that will display over 40 paintings by the artistic talent. Entitled "Beauty and Ugliness : Aesthetic of Marsi", the visitors will be taking a journey to search for a genuine meaning of aesthetic via the late Princess' unique artworks. The exhibition will be held at the National Gallery on Chaofah Road from November 7 to December 23, from 9am to 6.30pm (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays).

Princess Marsi's paintings have been critically acclaimed in the art society for full of intricate details, imaginary and figurative styles that imply the East and West philosophy. The exhibitions of her works were held for the first time in Thailand in 2010 and the second in 2013 under the different themes. For the third exhibition, the curator - Asst. Prof. Dr. Supachai Areerungruang – chose to highlight the aesthetic interpretation in the Princess works through her paintings, drawings, belongings, books and private films. All exhibited works portray "Beauty and Ugliness: Aesthetic of Marsi".

Aesthetic of Marsi is interpreted in four key words as displayed in four major exhibition rooms as followed:
1) Beauty: Understanding and interpreting the beauty in Princess Marsi's works through symbols, flowers, pets, people and literature.
2) Ugliness: Displaying works whose content involves the symbols about ugliness, death, mortally hideous appearance, skeleton, half-human-half-animal paintings that create metaphors in paintings.

3) Chronology of Marsi and Art History: presenting the development of the Princess' art creation that is linked to major events in her personal life, Thailand, Southeast Asia and the World in order to understand her works in the context of art history. This, will motivate the further in-depth study in the future.

4) Truth: Presenting the "truth" the Princess chose to be "an artist" until her last breath. Her works demonstrate the truth about life that consists of love, happiness and death.

Apart from the exhibition, there are other activities to promote art study including the talk on "Beauty and Ugliness" as appeared on the Princess Marsi's works and workshops. Special fashion and accessories collections inspired by the princess exhibited works will be available at the event with support from Flynow III.
