Bosch drives self-sustaining skills development in push to help build stronger family unity

Bangkok--21 May--ABM

Bosch is continuing its multi-year support program for the Hand-to-Hand Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Pattaya that protects disadvantaged children by providing food, clothing, medical care and educational opportunities. In addition to supporting kids, Hand-to-Hand also feeds marginalized families living in difficult conditions in slum areas.

The foundation recently opened a new community facility, Ruen Muang Maprang, Nong Pla Lai District, Pattaya that houses people of varying ages and needs. They were living on the streets, escaping domestic abuse, and senior citizens who are living alone. Those who are accepted to the facility must be committed to being part of the community and offer routine help with gardening, looking after kids and performing household duties.

The facility also has a career-oriented focus, and will teach baking skills, furniture-making, woodworking, and help residents find work as cleaners in hotels, or servers in restaurants.

Sithinee Winthachai, president of the Hand-to-Hand foundation, said, "The goal of the foundation and this Community Center is not only to provide a safe place to live, but also allow residents to reunify with displaced family members when possible. Most importantly, this project and others that we have initiated with Bosch's support, help build stronger family unity and harmony. There is no expectation or time limit on how long residents can stay, though some may transition out once they become financially stable. We will help them achieve that stage with our full effort"

Joseph Hong, Managing Director, Bosch Thailand, said, "The important work being done by the Hand-to-Hand Foundation is directly in-line with Bosch's commitment to society as part of its corporate core values to help shape a better future through proactive social engagement. In addition to our normal practice in CSR activities, I am pleased to see Bosch associates from a wide cross-section gather here today to celebrate 100 years of Bosch in Southeast Asia by sharing their volunteer spirits and bringing considerable passion and expertise to their mentoring in the community. We hope to see such skills development turn into expertise that can eventually help the community generate income. When this happens, parents can make a living without having to sacrifice their children's education nor live in separation from their children to earn income. Skills enhancement will help parents afford quality education for their children and keep the family together."

Throughout the day and on previous Bosch led 'Train-the-Trainers' mentoring sessions was a shared commitment among all participants to work together to address important basic needs while building and supporting skills development that were a relevant fit according to the interests of the individuals in the community. Most importantly, these skills can be gradually developed and refined over time for future income generation.

One of many initiatives undertaken by the community members was to apply their baking and cooking skills in a refurbished kitchen partly outfitted by Bosch with a wide range of new equipment, appliances and materials. Baked products and additional culinary creations will definitely generate extra income to the households.

Specially designed and outfitted wooden tables with inclusive shoe racks were built by trainees with Bosch technical support. Community members aim to market these and other handmade home furnishings and accessories to many prospective buyers including local furniture suppliers, and the general public.
