Bangkok--29 Nov--ABM

IKEA, the world's largest home furnishings retailer from Sweden, held a Roof Capping Ceremony today to celebrate the successful completion of its most unique store. IKEA Bang Yai is the first IKEA store in the world designed under the concept of offering a new shopping experience providing more convenience to Thai customers. The store is set to open in March 2018.

The Roof Capping Ceremony is a Swedish tradition held to thank neighbors for their support and assistance in building a house after the construction is completed.

Mr. Jaap Doornbos, Deputy Retail Manager for IKEA South East Asia said, "Our expansion is driven by our vision to create a better everyday life for the many people in Southeast Asia. Today, IKEA has six stores in the region – two in Singapore, three in Malaysia, and one in Thailand. Next year, we will open IKEA Bang Yai, our second store in Thailand. In 2019, we will be ready to serve the people of Penang, Malaysia with our latest store. Our expansion improves our economies of scale and makes IKEA even more competitive. With each store that we open, we reach more people and help make their homes better – more comfortable, more beautiful, and more sustainable."

IKEA Bang Yai is not going to be the usual blue box. It is IKEA's first store ever to offer customers an opportunity to enter and check out on every level. IKEA is also emphasizing more sustainable and eco-friendly facility management with the installation of 4,548 solar cells on the store's roof and other structural characteristics that enabled IKEA Bang Yai to become the first retailer in Thailand to be certified at the highest level for Green Building standards by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

The construction of IKEA Bang Yai took approximately 21 months. With a total area of 50,278 square meters, it is IKEA's biggest store in Southeast Asia. Work is now being carried out on the store's interior. In addition, over 450 employees at IKEA Bang Yai have begun testing their operations and processes to ensure they are ready to serve customers.

Mr. Thomas Friberg, Store Manager at IKEA Bang Yai, said, "I am proud to be here at IKEA Thailand's second store to welcome consumers from the west side of Bangkok. We've conducted numerous home visits to understand the lifestyles of Thais at home and their home furnishing needs, and we know that people here are looking for functional furniture to help them better manage space constraints. IKEA Bang Yai will serve over 7.3 million visitors residing within a 60-minute driving radius from the store. We will also attract millions more who live in various parts of Greater Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and beyond.

We want to offer more choice in products, ideas, and new inspirations in home furnishings to Thai consumers in the western areas of Bangkok and Nonthaburi. Once both stores are fully operational, IKEA Thailand aims to target 7.8 million visitors (4 million for IKEA Bang Yai) by the end of 2018. See you soon, in March 2018!"
