Travel Update - Thailand - December, 2008: Thailand Open for Tourism

Thursday 11 December 2008 10:44
Business as usual — both major Bangkok airports are open and normal flight schedules have resumed both for Thai Airways and most other international Airlines. Inbound flights are experiencing no problems at Suvarnabhumi International Airport and connecting inbound flights from both Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang Airports are running freely.

Outbound flights are still experiencing a few issues however. There are still are large number of people suffering from delayed flights out of the country. This has meant outbound flights have mainly been over-subscribed. This situation should ease as early as next week when it is expected that most outbound clients will have exited the country. Delayed tourists are staying in Thailand at the Thai government's expense for their hotel and subsistence. There could be a worse place to be stuck at then Thailand mid-winter!

Here in Thailand it is a beautiful winter's day 29 degrees Celsius, clear skies and fresh. Life here is going on as normal. I am looking out of my office window and I can see palm and fruit trees, Tuk-Tuks the hustle and bustle of Bangkok and the BTS (overland sky train) zooming past. There may be some disturbances in high political offices but for tourists and every day people it is business as usual.

Bookings for December have been adversely hit by the localized Airport disruption. Many hotels in Bangkok in particular are reporting bookings 50% below Peak Season average. However, hotels and agents in the South West of the Country (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi etc) have not lost many customers as a result of the Bangkok Airport closure as many tourist have continued to pour in via Phuket International Airport (based in the South West). Further, bookings across Thailand for Christmas and New Year are still firm and strong and it is becoming increasingly difficult to locate rooms at quality hotels and locations.
