Thai bourse grants annual social development award

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) honors and encourages philanthropic actions of individuals and organizations through its annual "Social Recognition Project" via SET-sponsored awards covering seven areas. This year's award for the Vimuttayalaya Foundation for social development has been granted to farmer Jon Jandai for his role model in using local wisdom for sustainable living.

SET President Kesara Manchusree said that this year the award granted to Jon Jandai was to recognize his outstanding determination and wisdom in promoting organic farm, and managing quality seed savings, for over 20 years, for sustainable living of the Thai people, in line with the world's food security goal. At today's event, SET granted THB 2 million to the Vimuttayalaya Foundation to support its main missions of enhancing communities and enriching Buddhism knowledge, particularly enabling urban communities to apply Buddhist principles in their everyday life for an array of benefits to the society. This underlines SET's commitment to promote good citizenship, leading towards a sustainable society.

Phramaha Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi, chairman of the Vimuttayalaya Foundation, said that Jon Jandai has set up Pun Pun Center for self-reliance, by growing an organic farm with learning center for sustainable plantation, as well as quality seed-saving source in Chaingmai (the northern part of Thailand). He has worked, created and shared his knowhow to the villagers, during the past 20 years, simply to achieve sustainable living, to encourage villagers to save money, live a simple life and stay healthy. The award signified and recognized his value chain contribution as a firm foundation for sustainability through social development for Thailand.

The award is part of the awards in seven areas, selected by seven organizations and is one of SET's social activity projects. SET has recently granted six awards covering the award from Sugree Charoensook which has been granted to Narong Prangcharoen, a Thai composer of classical music with international acclaim, who has dedicated more than 12 years to enhancing the standard of classical music composition in Thailand and building reputation for Thailand; the award from the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) which has just been granted to "Neon Kho Community Organization Development Institute" (Rural university, in Rayong province, the eastern part of Thailand) with a remarkable work in developing rural communities in Rayong, coaching villagers to rely on themselves under Sufficiency Economy philosophy, a path towards sustainability.

The award from the Duang Prateep Foundation has been granted to Somsak Eamsaard, a community activist who has dedicated more than 40 years to fighting with drugs and drug-related problems; the awards from the Thai Library Association has been granted to Chaveelak Boonyakanchana and Kanjani Thiradejh to honor their efforts and dedication in continuously developing library projects and enhancing reading habit in remote areas, while the education development award has been granted to Supit Chaimongkol, an educator, to value his dedication in empowering youth in the hill tribe villages on education. This year's awards from the Football History Association, has been granted to Nipon Malanon and Prasit Peingbangyang for their outstanding work and contribution to the football profession in Thailand.

SET "Towards the 5th Decade of Sustainable Wealth for Thais"
