SET market report for April 2017

- Market cap at THB 15.8 trillion, a 1.87 pct rise from end-2016

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index ended April at 1,566.32 points, gaining 1.52 percent from the end of 2016. Like most stock exchanges in the region, the Thai stock market was an attractive destination among foreign investors who were net buyers of shares worth THB 1.83 billion (approximately USD 52.17 million) last month and THB 8.35 billion from January to 11 May.

Among the key factors that boosted the Asian capital market indexes in April were the relief of global political tension and the rising confidence of European political stability.

At the end of April, a combined market capitalization of SET and Market for Alternative Investment (mai) was THB 15.8 trillion, up 1.87 percent from the end of 2016. The average daily trading value of SET and mai in April totaled THB 40.13 billion, down 8.18 percent from the same period last year, with a slight increase to THB 41.51 billion in the first half of May (as of May 11).

Key highlights for April

Securities:

- SET Index ended April at 1,566.32 points, up 1.52 pct from end-2016.

- Market capitalization of SET amounted to THB 15.47 trillion, up 2.62 pct from end-2016, while market value of mai was at THB 320.68 billion, down 24.61 percent from end-2016.

- Forward P/E ratio of SET was 15.24 times, while mai's was 36.03 times.

- Dividend yield ratio of SET was 3.15 percent at end-April, while mai's was 1.70 percent.

- In April, the average daily trading value of SET and mai fell 8.18 pct compared to the same period a year earlier to THB 40.13 billion, but rose 5.7 pct year-on-year to THB 48.56 billion for the January-April period.

- Foreign investors were net buyers of Thai shares in April at THB 1.83 billion, adding the net buy to THB 8.20 billion during Jan-Apr.

- In April, SET and mai-listed companies raised funds through equity worth a combined THB 28.19 billion, of which THB 27.19 billion was from the primary market and THB 1 billion from the secondary market. For the first four months, the total fund raised reached THB 51.85 billion.

Derivatives:

· The average derivatives trading volume was 244,808 contracts per day in April. For the first four months, the average derivatives trading volume increased 2.05 percent from a year earlier to 291,043 contracts a day, largely driven by the increase in transactions of Single Stock Futures.
