Women Weavers of Nong Bua Lam Phu and Their Stories Speaker Rose Marie Wanchupela

In Northeast Thailand vast numbers of women are superbly skilled at designing and weaving textiles in both cotton and silk. Rose Marie Wanchupela will share the stories of the remarkable weavers of Nong Bua Lam Phu village, with whom she has worked for over ten years, allowing a glimpse into the lives which are integral to the rich cultural and economic heritage of Northeast Thailand. The fine pure cotton fabrics woven there are marketed in Bangkok by Rose Marie (at the Rembrandt Hotel) who has had close association to the Northeast since her arrival there in 1963 as a Peace Corp volunteer

Rose Marie's love of textiles was instilled in her at a young age by her mother and grandmother who both treasured linen, cotton, wool and silk textiles. She became a native daughter of Northeast Thailand after marrying Prinya whose mother Sommai was a renowned fabric designer in her local area. She stimulated Rose Marie's interest in hand woven textiles and supported her in beginning her own textile business in 1985. Rose Marie will present a collection of the weavers' textiles at her talk.
