Chulalongkorn University's Engineering Faculty, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supot Teachavorasinskun, Dean of the Engineering Faculty, and True Group, led by Mr. Vichaow Rakphongphairoj, President (Co) of True Corporation Public Company Limited, announced the establishment of the TRUELAB@CHULAENGINEERING: 5G & INNOVATIVE SOLUTION CENTER at the university's engineering faculty as a center for developing 5G technology and solutions. True is also providing research scholarships to students from the undergraduate to doctoral levels, with an aim to help drive Thailand's success in the 5G era. Joining the announcement was Dr. Pravit Leesathapornwongsa, Commissioner of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), and Mr. Korkit Danchaivichit, Deputy Secretary General of the NBTC.

The TrueLab@ChulaEngineering: 5G & Innovative Solution Center will be located on a 600-square meter space in Building 3 at the Faculty of Engineering. The center is being built to promote and support research, development and innovation in 5G technology for use in educational, medical, transportation and industrial practices. It will be an important venue for learning and training, exhibiting relevant case studies, exchanging innovative ideas as well as sharing experiences in the form of open innovation, in which True will provide technical support, including equipment and devices, expertise and funds for researchers and students.

Mr. Vichaow Rakphongphairoj, President (Co) of True Corporation Public Company Limited, said, "True Group is committed to helping develop new technologies which is important to the Thailand 4.0 framework. We are pleased to have initiated 5G network performance trials and also organized the 'True 5G Digital Thailand, the 1st Showcase powered by TrueMove H' event, giving people the opportunity to experience 5G performance firsthand. Now, True and Chulalongkorn University's Engineering Faculty have joined together to support the NBTC providing the campus as a test area for 5G network performance to help promote knowledge and understanding about 5G technology among the public. As part of this effort, True is building the "TrueLab@ChulaEngineering: 5G & Innovative Solution Center," a central venue to research and test 5G technology. The center's facilities will be open to all relevant parties from both the public and private sectors, ensuring equal access and the opportunity to increase knowledge nationwide on the importance of 5G and how it can drive Thailand's economic growth.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supot Teachavorasinskun, Dean of the Engineering Faculty, Chulalongkorn University, said, "Chulalongkorn University, through its engineering faculty, realizes the importance of new technologies and innovation, especially 5G technology, which will play a critical role in Thailand's future economy and society. The faculty is committed to providing effective support in research and development to ensure that 5G network services bring about far-reaching benefits to Thailand. Partnering with True Group is an important step forward for the Thai education sector to work closely with the private sector to open the "TrueLab@ChulaEngineering: 5G & Innovative Solution Center," and True also offers research scholarships to qualified recipients. We are confident this partnership will bring about a number of benefits to university professors, researchers and experts, as well as students through hands-on learning experiences, which in turn, will enhance technological knowledge and expertise at the national level in Thailand."

Dr. Pravit Leesathapornwongsa, Commissioner of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said, "The NBTC's mission is to support Thailand's successful transition to the 5G era. This is extremely ambitious and requires the collaboration from different sectors in society, covering system installations and a trial center, and building social awareness on the benefits of 5G which will play an increasing role in supporting other advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and Tele-health. The NBTC is certain that the establishment of the True Lab will prove valuable as it will take research and development in 5G technology to a more advanced level in a short time and drive Thailand into the 5G era by our target date of 2020. The NBTC will continue to support the private sector in delivering public-centric services and most importantly, promote the comprehensive use of 5G technology and its significant benefits for the Thai people."
