Bangkok--20 Oct--124 COMMUNICATIONS
Workers at Ginaform Bra Factory ("Ginaform") in Bangkok have received early severance payments in full upon the closure of the facility today.
Clover Group International (“Clover”), the parent company of Ginaform, announced in September that it would cease operations at the factory at the end of October. However, due to a rapid completion of existing orders, workers have been released today and provided with a payment package including wages through the end of October, severance pay according to their length of service, and payment for unused holidays.
Workers who opted to resign voluntarily were also provided on October 6 with an additional one-time payment of 30 days' wages. All staff, regardless of whether they are terminated or resign, received full severance pay in accordance with their length of service, as well as payment for unused vacation.
Ms. Emily Lau, Chief Corporate Officer of Clover, said, “I am proud of the workers at Ginaform, who have rapidly completed their last batch of orders up to our stringent quality standards. The Thai Ministry of Labor has provided us with strong support throughout our closure process, and we would like to express our thanks to the Minister and to all parties who have assisted us. We would also like to thank our workers' union representatives for their efforts. We believe that responsible union engagement is the hallmark of a prosperous manufacturing facility."
On September 11, 2006, Clover remitted USD2.3 million (Baht 90 million) to a Bank of America account in Bangkok, to be held in reserve for final payments to Ginaform workers. The full amount was paid directly to employees' bank accounts today.
Closing Factory to Donate 10,000 Sturdy Plastic Bags for Flood Relief
Ms. Lau continued, "As a small gesture of goodwill, we will make use of appropriate materials from our factory to support flood relief efforts in Thailand. We will be supplying 10,000 high-quality 26’ x 17.5’ clear plastic bags, and several hundred cartons, boxes, and other materials via the Ministry of Labor to assist in logistics and transport of relief goods."
