Hard disk drive manufacturer Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) recently secured top honors at the 9th Thailand Energy Awards 2008.
The awards, organized by the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), Ministry of Energy, are divided into three categories: Factory, Building and Personnel. Hitachi GST was one of only 12 manufacturers — from an initial field of 58 nominees — recognized in the Factory category and is one of the few companies to have been recognized twice.
The key component contributing to Hitachi GST winning this award was the company’s GREEN 21 evaluation system. GREEN 21 ensures continual improvements in environmental activities to improve both corporate responsibility and profitability.
“Our GREEN 21 evaluation system not only promotes energy security but is also essential in the fight against climate change,” said Kazuya Takeda, General Manager, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Thailand). “This award is the result of a concerted effort by all the staff at our Prachinburi factory.”
The GREEN 21 system evaluates the company’s performance over eight environmental categories: Eco-Management, Eco-Mind, Eco-Products (Manufacturing), Eco-Products (Green Procurement), Next-Generation Product/Service Strategy, Eco-Factories (Reduce Global Warming), Eco-Factories (Resource Recycling) and Worldwide Environmental Partnerships. To ensure continual improvement and raise the level of environmental awareness, Hitachi has implemented the GREEN 21 evaluation system across all its operations.
“The Hitachi Group will continue to contribute to a sustainable, recycling-oriented society by offering products and services that reduce the impact on the environment, by conserving energy and natural resources, by reducing global warming and the use of hazardous chemicals,” said Mr. Takeda.
The Thailand Energy Award was established in 2000 to recognize organizations and individuals with outstanding performance records in energy saving and efficiency as well as alternative energy development. Judges include industry experts and representatives from related associations and educational institutions. Minister of Energy, Lieutenant-General Poonpirom Liptapanlop, presided over this year’s awards, which were held at the Chulabhorn Research Institute in Bangkok on June 30, 2008.
