Well known to Thais and foreigners residing in Thailand, Loy Krathong takes place on the 12th full moon on the Thai lunar calendar. Loy means “to float” and “Krathong” is a lotus shaped vessel crafted from banana leaves. The festival honors the Water Goddess. By the light of the moon, Krathong bearer light joss sticks, candles on the Krathong and makes a wish before setting the Krathong into the body of water. The traditional Thai belief is that the Krathong carry away bad luck and old sins, giving the person a happy and fresh start for the coming New Year.
