THAI Celebrates its 50th Anniversary on Historic First Flight to Hong Kong

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited is re-living its historic first flight as part of the 50th Anniversary celebration, on the Bangkok — Hong Kong route.

THAI’s historic flight in 1960 marked the beginning of a blossoming path not only for the airline, but also for the tourist industry in the region. THAI treaded new paths for the then unknown destinations like Bali and Kathmandu, and grew into an internationally-recognized brand carrier transporting passengers and cargo across five continents.

On this one-time only special “Nostalgic Flight,” passengers get to experience THAI’s first flight, as flown 50 years ago on 1 May 1960, but on this occasion in 2010 the travel is on board a Boeing 747-400 that has been repainted in the original livery design, as seen on the DC-6B aircraft in 1960.

Passengers traveling on THAI’s flight TG606, operating on the Bangkok — Hong Kong route, include Members of THAI’s Board of Directors, Royal Orchid Plus and Royal Orchid Holidays customers, cargo and agent representatives and members of the media.

The journey into nostalgia starts from the time passengers arrive at check-in, and on to the in-flight services that include a specially tailored and succulent menu selection for this trip. As well, passengers are presented a collection of THAI’s 50th Anniversary souvenirs such as a collector’s set of the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Postage Stamps and the original-designed THAI boarding pass. In recreating an atmosphere of nostalgia, THAI cabin crew are dressed in uniforms from that period.

Upon arrival in Hong Kong, passengers on the nostalgic flight are welcomed, as part of the ongoing anniversary celebration, with a festive reception by the Commissioner for Tourism of Hong Kong along with THAI’s President, Mr. Piyasvasti Amranand.

To celebrate the anniversary elsewhere, THAI is also treating all passengers departing from Bangkok on 1 May 2010 on all THAI flights with the tasty Golden Crispy Coconut Roll for dessert, served in a special THAI container that passengers can keep as a commemorative souvenir. Other commemorative activities to celebrate the airline’s Golden Jubilee will be staged throughout the year.
