AirAsia is starting off the year strong, with 3 new routes, including direct flights from Bangkok to Trang, Nakhon Phanom and Colombo (Sri Lanka). “In 2012 we are focused on building our connectivity within Thailand and the region to make sure that people have more options for low-cost travel. During the first quarter, we are launching three new destinations. Two of them are domestic flights including Bangkok-Trang and Bangkok-Nakhon Phanom while the third one is a direct flight between Bangkok-Colombo, Sri Lanka. All the flights will operate daily”, said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“We will continue to receive more brand-new Airbus A320 planes this year, which will enable us to introduce new routes and increase our destinations. At the moment, we are looking to explore China and other cities which are economic centers in the region. We are confident that there will be an influx of people traveling to Thailand from these destinations, which will positively contribute to tourism revenue in Thailand. Apart from adding new destinations, we will also be increasing flight frequency to our existing popular routes”, added the CEO.

The Trang route was added by popular demand, and the inaugural flight took off on 15 January 2012. The peaceful and breathtaking beach destination is an attractive place for many honeymooners and is famous for its local specialty, delicious Trang barbecue pork.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok-Nakhon Phanom route will start flying on 15 February 2012. The strategic location of Nakhon Phanom makes it a gateway to Laos via the third Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge which connects Nakhon Phanom to Khammouane, Laos. Main attractions include an important stupa at Wat Phra That Phanom, in a city full of cultural diversity with influences from Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.

Last but not least, the daily direct flights from Bangkok to Colombo, Sri Lanka will start flying on 1 March 2012. Sri Lanka’s main attractions include places of significance to many Buddhists who embark on religious pilgrimages every year. Many visitors each year travel to pay respect to the Lord Buddha’s tooth relic, located in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Kandy, while the tea plantations on Sri Lanka’s highlands are a peaceful retreat for those who enjoy nature and breathtaking scenery.
