VISITOR ARRIVALS TO HONG KONG IN FEBRUARY 2012

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced that the total number of visitor arrivals to Hong Kong in February 2012 reached 3,371,202, 15.3% higher than the same month last year. The performances of individual market regions during the month are summarised as follows:

- Mainland China — Mainland arrivals went up by 14.4% year-on-year to reach 2,296,814. Of these, 66.1% or over 1.51 million came to Hong Kong under the Individual Visit Scheme, representing an 18.5-% increase.

- Short-haul Markets — Overall short-haul arrivals rose by 16.1% year-on-year to 654,778, with South and Southeast Asia and North Asia registering growth of 24.4% and 22.7% respectively.

- Long-haul Markets — Growth of 23.2% was recorded for the long-haul arrivals, which totalled 360,219. All long-haul market regions, namely the Americas, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, as well as Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific, showed double-digit increase in arrivals.

For the first two months of 2012, cumulative arrivals climbed up by 15.2% to 7,513,244, with Mainland, overall short-haul and long-haul arrivals all showing year-on-year growth.

Overnight Visitors

Of all arrivals to Hong Kong this February, 49.7% or over 1.67 million belonged to same-day, in-town arrivals, representing an increase of 30.4% compared to the same month last year. The remaining 50.3% or about 1.70 million stayed overnight, a 3.5%-increase year-on-year. By market region, Europe, Africa and the Middle East achieved the greatest growth in overnight arrivals at 28.9%, which accounted for more than 131,000 or 72.3% of its overall arrivals.
