CTH Chooses HP Network Solution To Upgrade Thailand’s Cable TV Service

Monday 26 November 2012 15:00
Cable Thai Holding Plc (CTH) and HP have recently finalized an agreement to create a nationwide metropolitan Ethernet network (MetroNet) to deliver content to CHT’s approximately 300 cable operators across Thailand. This network will be centered at CHT’s headquarters in Bangkok, and rely on HP’s Gigabit Ethernet switches to provide adequate bandwidth for the real-time transmission of the latest in HD video entertainment.

Background

CTH was founded in 2009 by over 100 local cable TV operators from across Thailand with the objective of aggregating high-quality copyrighted content on a single platform. The formation of this organization has led to significantly reduced operating costs to the member operators and improvements in the amount and quality of the content available for subscribers. It has also made it possible for small local cable service providers to take advantage of the latest developments in broadband technology and IT infrastructure. Together these factors have led to the overall enhancement in service quality and reputation of local cable television providers in Thailand. At present, CTH consists of approximately 300 local cable TV operators which cover over 3.5 million households nationwide.

A primary mission of CTH is to continually upgrade and expand its nationwide network for the benefit of its member companies and their subscribers. To this end CTH has been undertaking a process of IT infrastructure development geared to delivering more content, faster, to its member companies across Thailand. A key aspect of this program is the establishment of a very high bandwidth, high speed network that can provide the latest high definition (HD) video content on a real-time basis as well as providing specific content to local operators for on-demand distribution. At the beginning of 2012 CTH began discussions with HP’s Networking team to explore the most effective and efficient manner to make this network a reality. After six months the two organizations came to the conclusion that the best way forward was the establishment of a MetroNet network that offers bandwidth of 10 Gigabytes per second, which is enough to support over 500 channels, to operators across Thailand.

In September 2012 CTH and HP finalized the agreement to establish the MetroNet and began deployment. The network is scheduled for completion before the end of 2012.

Technology

The CTH MetroNet will be use a hub and spoke design where content is stored in a central facility and then provided to cable operators on a real-time basis. The backbone of this network will be the HP 10500 Switch Series which will be deployed as both Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches and connect to the local operators by fiber optic cable. These HP switches deliver outstanding resiliency, security and multiservice support capabilities.

This network will be based on the unique HP FlexNetwork architecture, which unifies networking across the data center through to the local operator with a single network management system.

Benefits

The deployment of the CTH MetroNet by HP will allow CTH to offer its local cable operators an unprecedented range of content including both standard video as well as HD on a real-time basis or as an on-demand service. This network will be highly robust due to both its advanced design as well as the attributes of the HP 5820 switches that form its core. This is particularly critical for cable service providers who are totally reliant on the network to serve their customers.

From a business standpoint the new network will give CTH a strong competitive advantage over other providers due to the very high bandwidth that will be at its disposal and the fact that it can reach users in all parts of the country. This will allow its operators to offer more options and better service to their subscribers as well as attract new operators to join the CTH network. The ultimate winner will be Thai consumers nationwide who will now have reliable access to a wider range of high-quality entertainment, educational and sports programming than ever before.
