The Treasury Department hold the 16th TEMAN to show its potential as the leader of minting industry management in ASEAN

The 16th Technical Meeting of Mints in ASEAN or TEMAN, hosted by the Treasury Department, Finance Ministry has officially launched with representatives from 10 ASEAN countries along with over 170 participants worldwide attended to exchange views and experiences on mints production. The Treasury Department targets to reflect its potential to become the leading minting industry in ASEAN to welcome the upcoming AEC.

Today (May 28th, 2013) at Dusit Thani, Pattaya, Chonburi, Director -General of the Treasury Department Naris Chaiyasoot revealed that TEMAN is an annual event to show the potential and progress of minting production in Thailand to the international community. The 16th Technical Meeting of Mints in ASEAN or TEMAN is hosted by the Finance Ministry under the concept “Partnership in Excellence” during May 26th- June 1st, 2013 with representatives from minting industry in 10 ASEAN countries.

Besides the ASEAN countries, there are approximately 170 delegates and representatives from mint-related industry from America, Europe, Africa and Asia to attend the meeting in order to share their experiences.

Mr. Naris said that the “ 16th TEMAN marks another stepping stone of TEMAN and the Minting History in Thailand. TEMAN spirit is not only about learning , sharing and exchanging information but also to showcase the latest technology in producing coins from coin blank manufacturers including machineries and equipments as well as demonstrating the coins and medals production in Thailand to reflect the kingdom's potential as the leading skillful producer that has been recognized as one of the oldest countries to produce coins and medals in Asia. At the same time, "The Royal Thai Mint" has targeted to be the coins production centre in Southeast Asia as many ASEAN countries do not have their own factory while over 600 million ASEAN populations need to use coins which would annually generate 10 billions of Baht to the country once the ASEAN Economic Community or AEC is fully implemented in 2015.

At the academic meeting held during Tuesday May 28th-Thursday May 30th, 2013, there will be 21 substantial articles which divided to five groups as followed;

The first group “Future of Money” is about the future of currency. There are two articles; the first one will be narrated by the representative from the Bank of Thailand and Royal Australian Mints about the trend of using bills and coins compared to electronic card and other ways of payment and whether bills and coins are still important in the financial world. The second article would be about the type of currency in the near future which would be made from plastic-liked material, containing information of electronic payment called “MintChip” which is the revolution of currency proposed by the Royal Canadian Mint.

The second group “Coinage Material & Coin Security”. There are four articles on Metal coinage and mints design at a low cost but with high security (to prevent counterfeit)

The third group “Development & Innovation in Minting Industry”. There are seven articles on advanced technologies in mints production from stamped coin machinery, coin selection and cleaning black coin as well as laser technology in coin emblem and coin seal.

The fourth group “Process Improvement”. There are five articles on development of coin production proposed by representatives from mint and equipment manufacturers from various countries including the Royal Thai Mint that will propose two articles “Improvement of Royal Medal Manufacturing Process” which is about the development of commemorative medal production by inventing the new process. “Die Steel for 1 Baht Nickel Plated Steel Coin” about the improvement of the die life by replacing the material together with the learning process for the die.

The fifth group “Advancement of Plating Process”. There are three articles about the advanced technologies on metal coated steel core for blank coin production.

At the 16 th TEMAN, the Department of Treasury will provide commemorative coins for delegates and also sell them to the public. The commemorative coins will be offered in silver at 3,500 baht each and in copper at 600 baht at the Bureau of Royal Thai Mint, Rangsit from May 27 th onward and at Dusit Thani Hotel, Pattaya, Cholburi during May 27 th-30 th, 2013, said the Director -General of the Treasury Department.
