CHINA'S POWER INDUSTRY CONTINUES BUILDING BOOM; NEW INTERNATIONAL REPORT

HOUSTON, June 25 /PRNewswireAsiaNet/ -- American companies seeking global opportunities should not overlook China. Despite Asia's economic troubles, China continues construction of new power plants as part of a massive modernization drive. Industrial Information Resources (IIR) has developed a new report to help companies find these and other major overseas contracts.
IIR recently reported Shandong Zhonghua Power plans to build a $1.5 billion, 1320-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Liaocheng as part of its SZPP initiative. SZPP also includes a $800,000, 600-megawatt plant in Heze. Electricite de France and China Light & Power will develop both projects as joint venture partners.
The partners have finalized Liaocheng's preliminary engineering. Plans call for two Mitsui-Babcock pulverized coal-fired boilers with twin 660-megawatt steam-driven turbine/generators. Major contracts include turbines, substations, conveyors, silos, feeders, and waste treatment. Quote requests begin in July. Site preparation follows in January 1999. Completion is estimated for mid 2001.
Including SZPP, China plans to add 135 million kilowatts to its generating capacity. To meet this goal, 8 nuclear, 10 hydroelectric and more than 30 coal-fired plants are under construction or planned. Total spending could top $65 billion.
