The Ministry of Culture, Department of Cultural Promotion, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in collaboration with ICONSIAM, the Chao Phraya riverside global landmark, and the Kite Sport Association of Thailand Chula-Pak Pao, together host a delightful kite festivity ICONSIAM SUMMER KITE PLAYGROUND 2022," to preserve the Thai cultural and historical heritage. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Chao Phraya River, ICONSIAM's River Park plays hosts as a massive recreational kite flying ground with spectacles of kite-flying shows. In addition, kite fanatics and visitors can also enjoy an exhibition of traditional Thai kites from the four regions of the country and witness an exciting kite parade featuring an eclectic mix of fanciful giant kites, varieties of international kites and Thailand's longest LED giant octopus kite. DIYers are able to create their own kites and learn the skill to soar their kites skywards with kite-flying champion. The event runs from today to 24 April 2022 at River Park, ICONSIAM. ICONSIAM strictly adheres to Covid-Free Setting measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and comply with the hygienic standard according to the Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration: SHA Plus to ensure safety of all visitors.

The fun-packed festival offers four activities across 4 zones including:

Zone 1 Heritage Venue: Discover the stories and origins of traditional Thai kites from each of the four regions.
These large kites are exclusively designed and beautifully decorated by kite specialists including,

Chula Kite - Central Region: Chula Kite is distinctive for its five-ray shape, which is built out of five sticks of specific Seesook bamboo for its exceptional flexible quality. The two lower kite legs are known as Kha Kob or frog legs. After the structure has been formed by crosshatching the thread in to gridline, paper will be placed in the front. The Chula kite on display is designed by talented Thai artist Keng Tachaya whose passion for Thainess is his signature. His customized kite features giant that represents his unique identity and his own 'Pai Yak' design is a great combination of structural geometric graphic design and the delicate traditional Thai motif.

Phra Ruang Kite - Northern Region: Phra Ruang Kite is an elegant human-like kite, clearly visible from its. The design features barb fish motif inspired by the ancient stone stele dated back to King Ram Khamhaeng The Great's reign that says "My country is abundance. With fish in the water, and rice in the fields. The practice of making a Phra Ruang kite, therefore, is regarded as the uniqueness of Sukhothai era. Designed by Ajarn Theeraphon Thuaenphae, this wonderful kite presents the signature of Sukothai including the Loi Krathong and Candle Festiva, celadon ware and historical sites to depict the glory of Sukhotha,i from past to present.

Song Hong Kite - North-Eastern Region: Song Hong Kite or Dui-Dui Kite is almost identical to Chula kite. Song Hong kite's legs takes the same shape as its wings. The kite's upper half has a rectangle-shaped tenon to attach the sounding bar, or Snu, whereas the lower section has a cross bar for tying the two tails, for the balance when flying. Song Hong Kite, displayed at the event is designed by Mr. Narong Uraikhae, the Northeastern kite master from Buriram who wins 7 championship titles from major competitions across Thailand. He is named "The Isan Kite Master." His kite is Inspired by Buriram's major landmarks and attractions, Phanom Rung Historical Park and the Royal Monument of King Phuttha Yodfa Chulalok the Great, the newest landmark of the province. He perfectly blends these two with traditional Thai patterns.

Wong Duen Kite - Southern Region or Wabulae in Malay language, is a local Malay and the three southern border provinces's kite. The kite takes a shape of crescent moon, with a stick longer than its body attached to the underside of the upper wings. Between the middle of the wing and the crescent moon, there is a circular bent stick. Then it is covered with paper. The exquisite kite displayed features elaborated floral motifs, created by Mr. Muhammad Yakee Chewae, Vice President of the Yala Kite Lovers Group. He is regarded as the Southern Kite master with and a winner of beautiful kite design in the Royal Cup contest.

Zone 2 Revue Venue features of Thai cultural performances by the Department of Cultural Promotion such as Kratua Taeng Sua performance by Phasi Charoen Cultural Council, Sema String Puppet show by Lak Si Cultural Council, Isan Entertainment performance, Catching Ma Nil Mang Korn, Thai sword fight, Pong Lang Yuyen Wittaya performance, folk dance and song Praewa Kalasin by Taling Chan Cultural Council, Northern arts and culture show by the Phra Khanong Cultural Council, and North/Northeastern arts and culture show by the Huai Khwang Cultural Council.

Zone 3 International kite-flying show and Inflatable Kite Show featuring over 30-meter-long Fancy Kite by Thaitan Kite Team Thailand, a professional award-winning kite flying team who won the first place in the international kite competition. They also host a kite-making workshop for enthusiasts.

Zone 4 The Majestic Riverside Venue, the Kite flying ground for everyone: Get to learn the techniques of kite flying with championship experts from the Kite Sport Association of Thailand Chula-Pak Pao.

More fun activities continue for three weeks, on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as follows:
Enjoy the cultural show of the tale of Southern kites, as well as the award granting ceremony for winners of the Chao Weha Chula-Pak Pao Kite Competition. The winners receive a prize and trophy, with a total value of over 30,000 baht, from the Suan Dusit School of Culinary Art Alumni Association, under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. A special prize, VIZ COIN and trophy from ICONSIAM will also be given to winners of ICONSIAM Chao Weha 2022 - Chula Kite Fight. The winner of this year is Phra Rue Sri Tri Nate Team

13-17 April: Witness the international kite show from Vietnam to celebrate Thai New Year. Also on offer is a magnificent display of Central and Northern kites such as Chula, Pak Pao, E Lum, E Prat, Snake, and Phra Ruang kites.

21-24 April: The Chula-Pak Pao legend of kite culture show, and the cultural performances by Kite Sport Association of Thailand Chula-Pak Pao are not to be missed. The activities are led by the winning team of the Royal cup.
