Attention all designers!! ASA Experimental Design Competition Design Competition to Find the Best Designs to be Showcased at Architect Expo 2024

Mr. Chana Sumpalung, President of the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage, expressed his enthusiasm for this special competition organized as part of the Architectural Expo 2024, an annual grand event for architects, designers, and design and construction enthusiasts. Scheduled from April 30th to May 5th, 2024 at the Challenger Hall, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, Thailand. The exhibition this year revolves around the theme "Collective Language: Sensing Architecture''.  The goal is to raise global awareness of sensing and understanding architecture and design without boundaries, which resembles languages that are diverse.

To ensure the event's success, the Association has organized a special activity, the ASA Experimental Design Competition. This competition invites designers of all levels - professionals, students, and the general public, to submit creative designs that evoke people's emotions toward urban environments through the concept of "Sensing".  Designs should reflect a philosophy unrestrained by location and size, using Bangkok as a case study to explore similarities that are different. Participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from the daily human experience in various environmental contexts within society, such as the city's identity, the way of life of its people, and its architecture.

"The way people live their lives on the sidewalks, the vehicles on the roads, the aroma of street food, traffic sounds, beliefs, and many other things are all sensations that humans encounter in their daily lives. Bangkok is one of the cities that vividly expresses the way of life of its people through the senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste, making the city truly vibrant.  However, in today's ever-developing world, the lifestyle of people in modern society is increasingly tied to the digital world.  The society that demands constant awareness and a fast-paced lifestyle has led to a new technological advancement like Metaverse and Artificial Intelligence (AI), which have become vital aspects of modern life.  What will urban life look like in the coming years, and how will these changes impact the way people experience "emotions" and "sensations"?"

In this competition, the Association has outlined the understanding, presentation, and submission criteria as follows: 1.)  Participants are free to choose any specific site as the context of their design. The subject and scale can encompass architecture, urban design, interior design, or system design. 2.) Once the context is identified, participants must provide a conceptual explanation alongside drawings, analyses, sections, plans, renderings, or perspective drawings in any scale. These submissions should demonstrate how the design solutions effectively respond to the "senses" in both current and future environments."

The judging criteria for the competition include: 1.) Creativity (40%): The ability to generate innovative ideas and design 2.) Relevance in interpreting the topic (30%): Presentation of new ideas that redefine the concept of "sensation", including storytelling with depth and engagement. 3.) Clear Communication (30%): Clarity in conveying the concept (Presentation techniques will not be considered in the judging criteria.) Submissions are open to students, architects, urban planners, designers, artists, and analysts, either individually or as a team. There are no restrictions based on age, gender, or nationality, and participants may submit an unlimited number of entries. However, submitted works must be original and not previously published or created for work or completed projects.

Additionally, participants must ensure that they possess legal and copyright rights to all submitted materials. Entries containing materials or components for which the participant does not hold ownership will be disqualified. In the event of a copyright infringement discovery, awards will be revoked. Interested individuals can register for the competition free of charge and submit entries online starting today until April 12, 2024. The committee will conduct the first-round selection on April 15-16, 2024, followed by the second round on April 23-26, 2024. Shortlisted entries for the Architect Expo 2024  will be announced on April 22, 2024. Winning entries will be announced, and awards will be presented at the event on May 5, 2024, the final day of the Architect'67 Expo. Applicants can register and receive updates through www.asacompetition.com."

In the general public category, the first prize winner will receive 100,000 Baht, the second prize is 50,000 Baht, and the third prize is 30,000 Baht. Additionally, three honorable mention awards will receive certificates. For the student category, the first prize winner will receive 50,000 Baht, the second prize is 30,000 Baht, and the third prize is 20,000 Baht. Similarly, three honorable mention awards will be granted certificates. Regardless of the prizes, the ASA Experimental Design Competition is a fascinating event that provides designers with the opportunity to explore and discover creative ways that respond to the "sensation" in the current urban society. The ASA believe that the competition will be well-received, with a large number of submissions from designers.

Finally, we extend a warm invitation to all interested individuals to follow and support all the shortlisted design entries, which will be exhibited in the Architect Expo zone.
