Bangkok--18 Jul--ตลท.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), together with Amarin Printing and Publishing PCL, Nation Multimedia Group PCL, Nanmee Books and Matichon PCL, has launched Know how to earn, then learn how to spend - a short story contest promoting a culture of savings and the judicious use of money. The competition offers more than THB 1 million in prizes.
This is the fourth time this very successful annual event has been staged, President Ms. Patareeya Benjapolchai said.
“To achieve its mission of promoting savings and investment, SET must ensure that its youth and public educational programs convey accurate information and develop a thorough understanding of personal finance. For some years, the Exchange has continued to arrange activities, such as this short story contest, which emphasize the importance of savings, investment and setting life goals, and which teach personal financial management skills. This competition has spawned the publication of more than 200,000 copies of short story compilations which have reached readers nationwide through SET Corners and through more than 130 educational institutions,” Ms. Patareeya added.
One such anthology won an award in 2004, and was selected by the Ministry of Education as supplementary reading for high school students. The success of Know how to earn, then learn how to spend has been due to the creativity and imagination of young Thai writers and readers, and SET is delighted to be part of it.
Contest participants need to show readers how to earn income honestly without taking advantage of others, and how to best use their money for a variety of purposes, including savings and revenue generation. The project supports an approach to personal financial management which leads to good health - physical, psychological and financial - and to lifelong balance and stability, Know how to earn, then learn how to spend short story contest Chairman Dr. Maruey Phadoongsidhi said.
The event is now open to applicants from five levels: 1) junior high schools (matthayom 1-3); 2) high schools (matthayom 4-6) and vocational schools; 3) universities and higher certificate of occupational education institutions; 4) teachers and instructors; and 5) the public. Winners from all levels will receive awards worth more than THB1 million, and the educational institutions from which they originate will receive a commemorative plaque and a mini-SET Corner.
Ancillary to this program, there will be two writing workshops, free-of-charge and open to anyone interested. The first one, How to write an award-winning story will be on July 29, 13:00 — 16:00 hours, at the Professor Sangvien Indaravijaya Auditorium, SET Building, and the second, Short-story writing drill… in a search of quality writers will be conducted on August 5, from 08:00 - 16:00 hours, at Rm. 1101, 11/f, SET Building.
People may enter the contest individually or in groups of no more than three. Their short stories must be original and never previously published. It must be in Thai and must not violate copyright.
