Providing the opportunity to develop more skillful Orthopaedic physicians with the use of high technology for better treat to patients
Orthopaedic and Anatomy Department, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, in corporation with Zimmer Medical (Thailand) Co., Ltd officially launched new Orthopaedic learning center, “Chiang Mai-Zimmer Institute” with the opening course in order to lift up the standard for Orthopaedic surgical procedure with state-of-the-art technology.
Orthopaedic procedure has been developed and improved at the fast pace. There are several efforts to make it even better today. The first effort is to make smaller incision with the least invasive to surrounding tissue which will result in significantly less recovery time comparing to the traditional procedure. Secondly, there is an effort to make the surgery on the smallest scale barely visible for organ or tissue transplant and implant. The last effort is to create a system to control the accuracy of the incision in the Orthopaedic surgical procedure to minimize possible error.
Nowadays, Orthopaedic physicians are using many technologies to improve for smaller incision procedure i.e. Arthroscopic Surgery, Computer Assisted Surgery to plan a more accurate bone position to be cut, especially in total hip and total knee replacement by using Minimally Invasive Surgery. This procedure causes less invasion to patients because the muscle sparing approach is intended not to cut muscles or tendons, resulting in less blood loosing, quicker recovery, shorter hospital stay and patients can continue with their daily activities faster. However, the physicians should receive the proper training especially with the use of new technology ahead of the actual operation to ensure that patients get the best quality service provided. For all proficient training courses, the participants will be able to try out operating with the anatomies under the instruction from the expert. Moreover, the institute will hold the workshop with the actual patient operated by the expert as well as holding the seminar to create deep knowledge to all physicians including how to select the patient, surgical procedure and to see the result after operation. In the nearing future, Thailand could be expected the high standard of training structure in all fields of physicians following this practical course.
“The Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University is the medical school with the vision to be the leading educational institute with international standard. So it is needed to establish the Orthopaedic learning institute. We expect to see the institute would be able to help providing the opportunity to develop the orthopaedic physicians to be the expert and able to use high technology and to enhance the potential treatment to the patient.” Dr. Supoj Wuttikarn, M.D., Prof. and Head of the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, said.
Located at Anatomy Department, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, “Chiang Mai-Zimmer Institute” supported by Orthopaedic, Anatomy department, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University and Zimmer Medical (Thailand) Co., Ltd will be holding courses four times a year, focusing on skilled training courses for particular orthopaedic operation with the use of high technology to treat patients, for example, Minimally Invasive Surgery for THA and TKA, Arthroscopic, Computer Assisted Surgery and spinal surgery training courses.
