Australian Political Parties Support IMF Contribution

In response to questions from the local media, the Australian Ambassador
to Thailand, Mr. Cavan Hogue today said:
"The Australian government decision to contribute A$1.35 billion to the
IMF Thai rescue package has the support of both sides of the Australian
Parliament.
Announcing the decision, the Treasurer Mr. Peter Costello commented that,
"Through participation in this financing package, Australia will be joining
other key countries in the Asia region to support Thailand and to ensure
continued economic stability in the region."
Shadow Treasurer Mr. Gareth Evans is reported as saying, "It's absolutely
reasonable that Australia as a key economic and political player in the
region, be part of the international support process."
Comments by the independent member for Oxley do not reflect the views of the
