Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, as the national carrier of the Thailand and one of the world’s airlines, states its support of climate change negotiations that will take place in Copenhagen as part of COP15.

Mr. Piyasvasti Amranand, President of Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, said “THAI affirms a continued strong stance to support efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the commercial airline industry. The Company, as part of the global aviation industry that has joined forces to reduce carbon emissions, is in support of COP15 climate change negotiations. THAI is amongst the world’s airlines, airports, air navigation service providers and aircraft manufacturers who have developed and committed to a single vision and common set of principles and targets to address aviation emissions.”

The principles that THAI supports include the positioning that aircraft CO2 emissions should be addressed in any post-Kyoto global framework through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Emissions from aviation should be addressed through the ICAO, adopting a global sectoral approach that does not distort competition amongst airlines, treats aviation as one indivisible sector rather than by country and takes a global approach to emissions reduction. Furthermore, aviation emissions should only be accounted for and paid for once.

THAI also supports the targeted goal that the aviation industry can achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and work towards reducing aviation carbon emissions by 50 percent in 2050. In order to make this possible, the Company also supports a move towards increased government assistance through necessary investments to modernize air traffic management, investment in aerodynamic and operations technology research and development through academic and industry partners, and investment in the development and commercialization of sustainable, second-generation biofuels for aviation use.

As part of the commercial aviation industry serving the global traveling public, THAI is committed to support carbon emission reduction efforts so that the aviation sector may achieve carbon neutral growth from 2020 and work towards a 2050 goal of reducing emissions by half compared to 2005 levels. THAI is working with the airline industry to tackle climate change while continuing to serve global economies as well as the international airline customer.

Always making efforts to be a Green airline, THAI has reduced its carbon emissions by approximately 68,000 tonnes per year since implementing a strenuous fuel management project in 2005. THAI is also the first Asia-Pacific airline to undertake a carbon offset project with the International Air Transport Association, among a number of other initiatives on carbon reduction.
