On the International Women's Day 2022, Chia Tai Company Limited, Thailand's leading innovative agricultural company, has continuously supported and empowered women in the workplace by presenting the story of a professional female breeder - Ms. Jarunee Buaboocha, Assistant Vice President Research & Development, who has started her career as a "plant breeder". Throughout 30 years, she has successfully introduced new vegetables to the market, all of which could translate to the better productivity for farmers and food security to consumers.

"What would a girl with agriculture degree do?" The question that Ms. Jarunee has lost count being asked when she started her career. From a station academic officer to Assistant Vice President Research & Development of Chia Tai, her career path was filled with determination, appreciation, and passion in what she did. Her countless outstanding performances have spoken it all. Her latest innovation was Century Star, one of Chia Tai's awarded watermelon species. It is our latest seedless watermelon breed what won All-America Selections(R) Regional Winner from All-America Selections (AAS) in the United States of America. Not only it adds to the market a new choice, it also increases agricultural products value. This innovation has guaranteed that the commitment and the courage to think out of the box can lead to success. "No matter male or female, we can be successful if we are determined and passionate in what we do", said Ms. Jarunee.

A plant breeder's profession is to make plants with better quality, qualification, able to stand certain weather, diseases, and insects. With that, farmers will be able to grow diversified crops in many regions of Thailand. Apart from that, they also make sure the products' taste and texture match the market's need. Each step of plan breeding takes time, from planting, testing, adjusting, and improving. It never takes less than 5 - 10 years to work on each breed. This is because we make sure that the corps are exactly what people need and beneficial for farmers, traders, consumers, which eventually lead to food and agricultural sustainability.

"The role of plant breeders is to develop breeds so farmers have more to plant with quality. That's why our job contributes to agricultural sustainability. No matter what the climates are, farmers still have quality seeds to plant… this is agricultural sustainability, especially in terms of human food", Ms. Jarunee emphasized the importance of plant breeders towards food sustainability.

At Chia Tai, everyone has equal opportunity to shine and grow.
