Zhengzhou Cable TV builds Asia's first Dynamic Packet Transport network
BEIJING, 15 February, 2000/PRNI-HK-AsiaNet/ -- Zhengzhou Cable TV, a prominent service provider in Henan Province, is building Asia's first integrated broadband multiservice network based on Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT) technology from Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO), the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. Zhengzhou Cable TV currently covers Zhengzhou city and its seven counties, serving over 320,000 subscribers. By the end of this year, that number is expected to grow to 450,000.
Zhengzhou CATV's new broadband network is based on Cisco's 12000 GSR series, the premier routing product family designed and developed for the core of service provider IP backbones. Services that Zhengzhou CATV will offer include Voice over IP (VoIP), videoconferencing, Video on Demand (VoD) and Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP VPN).

In China, DPT technology, first introduced last year in the fourth phase of Cisco's Optical Internetworking Strategy, has already received endorsements from academics and infotech experts from renowned institutions such as the National Broadcasting & Television Bureau of China, China Academy of Sciences, Data Communication Institute of Information Industry Ministry, Tsinghua University and the Henan Province Broadcasting Movie and Television Office. As DPT adoption accelerates, the technology is expected to become a key de facto architecture for manymission-critical network backbones in China.
Mr. Ming-Shen Zhou, chief engineer at Zhengzhou CATV, said: "We made the decision to be the first major service provider in Asia to adopt DPT because we believe in the technical merits of the technology, and the excellent support from Cisco that we received."
DPT technology delivers high bandwidth, resilient fiber rings optimized to carry large and rapidly growing volumes of packet traffic. DPT technology provides significant cost reductions through equipment layer elimination, enhanced bandwidth efficiency and plug-and-play operations. DPT also combines LAN-like capabilities such as packet prioritization, multicasting and address filtering with fast protection switching to provide a robust metro transport platform for enhanced IP services such as voice and video over IP and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
With DPT, incumbent carriers with an extensive base of SONET/SDH network equipment can leverage existing hardware while migrating to packet optimized transport solutions. Greenfield service providers can move directly to packet-optimized transport either by deploying DPT on dark fiber or WDM (Wave Division Multiplexing) transport gear.
