Cisco, Datacraft Deploy Hi-Speed Network for Thailand’s First and Largest E-learning Center

Cisco Systems (Thailand) teamed up with Datacraft (Thailand) in deploying high-speed network for Thailand’s first and largest e-learning center at Srisakdi Charmonman IT Building, Assumption University, to be the center of Excellence in Information Technology Learning.
Asawin Kangvolkij, Managing Director, Cisco Systems (Thailand) Ltd., said Cisco has cooperated with Datacraft (Thailand) in deploying a high-speed network for the e-learning center at Srisakdi Charmonman IT Building, Assumption University. This building has ten floors. It also houses the College of Internet Distance Education, which has started operation since mid-2004, and can accommodate 100,000 students per year.
“Cisco networking will enhance ABAC’s e-learning system in terms of speed and performance, enabling it to compete with international universities,” added Asawin.
Somchart Kanha, General Manager, Datacraft (Thailand) Ltd., said the network deployed at the e-learning center will accommodate a wide variety of applications across the campus. It is composed of Cisco’s high-end equipment including a full range of Cisco Catalyst LAN switches, Cisco Wireless LAN solutions, as well as Internet routers and wireless access points. The deployment also includes data protection and access control. The project is worth over Bt40 million.
After hardware installation, Datacraft has set up a special team to manage IT operation at Srisakdi Charmonman IT Building, and will provide dedicated support staff and system engineers to provide assistance to the university for two years. “This is the biggest networking project we’ve ever carried out in the education sector. This project is worth more than Bt40 million, and it provides infrastructure for ABAC’s initiative in setting up the country’s largest e-learning center,” Somchart added.
Prof. Dr. Srisakdi Charmonman, Chairman of the Board and CEO, College of Internet Distance Education, Assumption University said HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindkhom has kindly blessed the foundation stone of Srisakdi Charmonman IT Building (SCIT Building) on 27 June 2002, and she will preside over the opening ceremony of this building on August 20 this year. Srisakdi Charmonman IT Building is modern, covering an area of about 10,000 square meters and over 2,000 PCs. This building is fully equipped with facilities like room of Internet Distance Conference. The Internet room is equipped with 408 computers, and this is one of the country’s biggest Internet rooms with electric supply reserved by both batteries and generator. In this building, there are also IT rooms for the blind, deaf, autistic children, as well as genius students and elderly people.
Also located here are VP-IT Office, and offices of several IT associations such as Thailand Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Thailand Joint Chapter of the Computer Society and the Engineering Management Society of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Thailand Chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC), Thailand Internet Association, Association of Thai Internet Industry, and Prof. Dr. Srisakdi Charmonman Foundation.
Other IT-related units located at this building include Catholic data center, Internet-based radio station, 4 TV production rooms, digital library, and IT curriculum center. Internet and computer security center, software testing center, gaming data center, study center for social effects, software engineering center, and e-government center, etc. Prof. Dr. Srisakdi Charmonman talked about the history of Srisakdi Charmonman IT Building, saying that Bro. Dr. Prathip Martin Komolmas, the Honorary President of Assumption University has long planned to establish an advanced IT center to enhance learning experience for ABAC students. The building is named after Prof. Dr. Srisakdi Charmonman for his praiseworthy contributions.
