Bangkok--Sep 20--IDC Thailand
IDC's Asia Pacific PC Monitor Tracker reveals that Thailand PC monitor market grew by 9.4% in 2Q, 2004 over 1Q, 2004 with approximately 308,000-unit shipment. LCD monitor accounted for 13.2% of total monitor market with 41,020 units. IDC expects Thailand LCD monitor sales to grow 40.2% in 2004.
Ms. Kritsana Chuenjaiboon, Associate Market Analyst, Hardware and Peripherals Research, IDC Thailand said, "LCD monitor is becoming more popular in Thailand PC monitor market in 2004, due to high demand from organizations that wish to replace CRT monitors to LCD monitors for their better image. Moreover, The higher rate of PC bundling with LCD monitor is also driving to raise a huge growth of LCD monitor in 2004 although the problem of TFT Panel shortage still has not been resolved yet. IDC forecasts that LCD monitor market will continue to grow approximately 166,000 units over this year.
In branded market, there are intense competitions for both CRT and LCD monitors by offering attractive price and promotion especially in CRT 17" monitor, which was the most popular CRT size in 2Q 2004 with 10.3% sequentially growth whilst the growth of CRT 15" monitor was dropped due to narrow price gap between CRT 15" and CRT 17" sizes. Therefore buyers are willing to pay a bit higher price to get more display area. As a result of these, the growth of CRT 15" size was dropped around 6.0% sequentially.
LCD monitor in branded market grew by 6.5% sequentially. LCD 15" size had the highest growth rate although there was an increased in price of LCD 15" size due to major problem of TFT panel shortage. Nevertheless, seasonal of budget spending from both government and corporate sectors, which preferred LCD 15" size because of price constraint concerns and wish to replace CRT monitor to LCD monitor for better imaging. These are the important factors to boost a huge growth for LCD 15" size to grow 25.0% sequentially.
On the other hand, LCD 17" size was contracted by 16.4% sequentially in unit shipments to account for 33.1% in share, 9.1 percentage points down from the previous quarter. As a result of an increase in availability of 15" LCDs in Thailand that are more affordable than the larger 17" size, the commercial sector was encouraged to increase demand for smaller-sized LCD monitors this quarter.
Monitor Trend in 2004 — The 17” CRT monitor will dominate the market in 2004, with consumer preferences gradually shifting towards flat monitors. The 15” CRT will still have its own place in commercial and government sectors due to price constraint concerns, but overall 15” CRT shipments are likely to continue to decline. Meanwhile, professionals in specific industries will continue to prefer larger CRTs to LCDs due to better image precision and quality. In addition, the extended worldwide shortage of 15” LCD panels will keep the price gap between 17” CRTs and 15” LCD monitors from falling too rapidly, and hence delay a large number of mainstream consumers from migrating to LCDs.
