Cargill Agriculture for Lunch program benefits 5,000 studentsin northeastern region of Thailand

Cargill, in collaboration with the Internal Security Operations Command Region 2 and Suranaree University of Technology, rolled out the Agriculture for Lunch program for needy schools in the northeastern region. This initiative has been created two years ago with the objective to support and promote nutritional well-being among adolescents in the communities where the company operates. Aimed at giving opportunities and a better quality of life, the project is in line with the company's commitment to enriching the lives of local communities and promoting sustainable business operations. Over 5,000 students of 26 schools have benefited from this program till date.

Mr. Sukiet Kittitammachote, Corporate Affairs Director, Cargill Siam Co., Ltd. said: "This project seeks to promote proper nutrition among students and adolescents aged 7-14 years. The project uses an integrated approach to educate them about nutrition and food that are good for their physical development and growth. It also empowers students through trainings about modern agricultural activities aimed at motivating them to become young farmers. We hope that the project will equip them with the skills and knowledge required to make a living and a build a career in the future. With cooperation from the public sector and community leaders, the project has successfully achieved its goals."

The Agriculture for Lunch program includes activities to educate and develop skills of young farmers such as hydroponic vegetable and mushroom cultivation, fish farming and raising chicken for eggs. The produce is then cooked for the participating schools and sold in nearby communities. Have benefitted from a budget of 2.1 million baht approximately, the project has also helped schools in saving a cost of 36,000 baht per month/420,000 baht per year on lunch.
