Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) has been awarded the ASEAN Renewable Energy Project Award 2024 by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) for its innovative waste-to-energy project at the Wang Thong Layer Complex in Phitsanulok Province. The project, which converts chicken manure into renewable energy, showcases the company's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly egg production.
Somkid Wannalukkhee, head of the egg business at CP Foods, stated that the company prioritizes applying technology and creating innovations to develop clean, safe, and environmentally friendly food. Under the concept of good farm management towards zero waste, the company promotes the most efficient use of resources and waste recycling through utilizing Anaerobic Covered Lagoon technology for biological waste treatment (Biogas system) converting chicken manure to renewable energy for farm operations.
This marks the second time CP Foods' Egg business has received this prestigious award, following the recognition of the Chok Chai Farm Complex in Nakhon Ratchasima province in 2022 for renewable energy development
The Biogas system aims to sustainably manage chicken manure and farm waste while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Enabling the farm produces zero wastewater discharge and minimize odor. As a result of this project, the complex utilizes 80% renewable energy of its total energy consumption and has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 1,947,698 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent
"This award reflects our good practices in developing a low-carbon food production chain, fostering business growth alongside sustainable social and environmental development," Mr. Somkid stated
The residue from the biogas system is used as fertilizer for chemical-free vegetable cultivation within the farm and shared with local farmers. The sludge from the biogas system supports chemical-free seed production at the Royal Plant Seed Center in Phitsanulok Province. Today, Wang Thong Farm Complex serves as a learning center for efficient biogas production, supporting the transition to a low-carbon society
Furthermore, the company aims to further develop the egg complex to achieve 100% renewable energy usage (RE100%), supporting its goal of becoming a Net-Zero organization by 2050.
The ASEAN Energy Awards is the highest recognition for excellence in energy management and initiatives for public and private organizations in ASEAN countries. Organized by the ASEAN Centre for Energy, an intergovernmental organization established to drive renewable energy use in ASEAN members, this year's award ceremony was hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Laos PDR in Vientiane.
