Bangkok--Sep 10--Seagate Seagate Technology, Inc. (NYSE:SEG), a leading manufacturer of computer tape drive products, has announced the Scorpion 96, a DDS-3 DAT autoloader that offers up to 96 Gbytes of reliable, high-performance, hands-free backup for network servers and workstations. "The Seagte Scorpion 96 features best-in-class reliability, performance and compatibility, making it an ideal automated backup solution for department and enterprise servers and workstations," said Kevin Perry, senior director of marketing and business development. "Network administrators have long relied on DAT solutions to protect their data and the Scorpion 96 autoloader delivers what they expect and more." The Scorpion 96's cartridge magazine holds four DDS-3 tapes which each have a capacity of up to 24 Gbytes in compressed mode. A cleaning cartridge can also be substituted for a tape in one of the cartridge slots allowing unattended cleaning. The Scorpion 96 features several improvements over the company's DDS-2 autoloader including much higher- performance with a data transfer rate of up to 2.2 Mbytes per second compared to the 800 Kbytes per second achieved by the DDS-2 autoloader. The drive also offers improved read-channel performance, improved self- cleaning, energy saving features and fewer electronic components than the DDS-2 model. The Scorpion 96 is fully compatible with all DDS-1, DDS-2 and DDS-3 tapes. Operating with a SCSI-2 interface, the Seagate Scorpion 96's compact design permits it to be mounted entirely within a full-height 5.25-inch drive bay. The drive offers up to 96 Gbytes without operator intervention, can transfer data at rates of up to 2.2 Mbytes per second and offers a 45-second average file retrival from any tape. It features a field-proven mechanism that uses an electronic tape path control to ensure long life for the head, drum and key components. The Scorpion 96's sophisticated eight-character LED display communicates up-to-the-minute autoloader operation information, such as drive status, cassette position, loading/unloading commands and any insertion errors. A step-button allows the operator to manually step through the cassettes one-by-one. Users can select operational information to be displayed in either English, French, German or Spanish and the LED screen can be adjusted to read horizontally or vertically. The drive is compatible with several leading software applications including Seagate Backup Exec for Netware, Backup Exec for NT and Cheyenne's ARCserve.
