Ride-hailing is powering safer night-time mobility in Bangkok

New data from Bolt's Night-Time Mobility Survey, conducted by IPSOS, shows that 60% of Thais use ride-hailing apps weekly or more often, including 21% who do so daily. The findings confirm that ride-hailing is not only convenient but also an integral part of how people in Bangkok and other urban centres move around.

As Bangkok remains one of the world's most visited cities, welcoming tens of millions of international arrivals each year, the demand for safe, accessible and reliable mobility after dark continues to grow. With nightlife, dining, and tourism forming a major part of the capital's economy, ride-hailing has become essential to keeping Bangkok moving long after public transport hours end.

While convenience (81%) and affordability (46%) remain the top reasons people use ride-hailing, one in three users (30%) cite safety as a main factor, whether to avoid drunk driving, get home after a night out, or feel more secure when travelling at night. The survey also shows that:

  • 63% use ride-hailing when travelling late at night or in unfamiliar areas,
  • 52% when tired or after consuming alcohol, and
  • 33% when feeling unsafe using public transport.

These patterns highlight that ride-hailing has become a preventive safety tool, enabling more responsible mobility choices in Bangkok's busy night-time economy.

Safety extends beyond individual users. Ninety-two percent of respondents have booked a ride for friends or family to make sure they got home safely. Additionally, 96% of Thais believe ride-hailing helps reduce drunk-driving accidents, and 21% say it provides safer night-time travel options.

"Bangkok's nightlife and service economy depend on people being able to move safely and affordably at any hour," said Nathadon Suksiritarnan, General Manager of Bolt Thailand. "Ride-hailing isn't just about convenience, it supports responsible mobility choices, helps prevent accidents, and contributes to safer urban living."
